Owatonna is a small town in Minnesota, located about 20 miles southwest of Minneapolis. Owatonna was first settled in 1851 and became a village in 1875. The population of Owatonna was 1,853 at the 2000 census. The history of Owatonna begins with the first Europeans to arrive in this area – French traders. In 1851, Jean-Baptiste LeMaire and his party traveled through this region on their way to preach Christianity to the Ojibwe people. They camped at what is now known as Prairie du Chien before moving on downriver to what is now known as Owatonna. At the time, this area was part of Dakota Territory and belonged to the Cheyenne Sioux tribe. As white settlers began arriving in this region, they quickly realized that there were vast amounts of natural resources here. This led to the development of businesses and industries in Owatonna over time – including a woodcarving shop, an flour mill, a cheese factory, and more! In 1970, Owatonna joined the larger city of Minneapolis – making it one of its largest communities by population (although still quite small by today’s standards).
