There is no one specific history of the Otsego National Guard, but it has roots that go back to the early 1800s. The unit was organized officially on November 15, 1851, as the first militia in Minnesota. In 1872, a new armory and barracks were built in downtown Otsego and the guard was renamed the “Otsego Volunteer Infantry Regiment”. The Otsego National Guard has seen many changes over the years; however, its core mission has always been to support local law enforcement efforts and protect citizens from crime. The unit has participated in numerous wars since World War II, most notably during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Today, there are approximately 930 active duty members of the Otsego National Guard; however, due to budget cuts and changing needs within law enforcement agencies across Minnesota, there is potential for an even larger force should future crises arise. Additionally, due to its longtime commitment to service within our community and its close ties with local government officials – including mayors – the Otsego National Guard enjoys strong collaboration with municipal police departments throughout rural Minnesota.

The Otsego National Guard Museum is a museum located in Otsego, Minnesota. It was opened in 1963 and is the only national guard museum in the United States. The museum has exhibits on the history of the Otsego National Guard and on military weaponry and equipment from World War II to present day.
Otsego, Minnesota is a small town located in the state of Minnesota. The population was 541 at the 2010 census. Otsego is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and is bordered by Antioch to the north, Alexandria to the east, Hastings to the south and Plymouth to the west. The first settler in what is now Otsego County was John Nicolay who bought land from Louis Kephart in 1838. Nicolay named his new settlement after his uncle, George Nicolay, who had died childless while hunting in Canada six years earlier. In 1846, Ottumwa Clearwater donated land to build a church on what would become Main Street in Otsego. The first school opened in 1847 and served students from Kindergarten through Grade 8. In 1860, a post office was established at Otsego with J C Spaulding as its first postmaster. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln were born here into an old farming family that had lived near this community since 1795; he became US President when he was elected on November 6th 1865
The National Guard has been a part of the United States since 1775. The first National Guard units were raised in Rhode Island in 1776, and by 1814, all states had their own militias. In 1861, during the American Civil War, the Union military forces consisted of about 116,000 men organized into 11 infantry brigades and 2 artillery brigades. By 1865, only 13 states remained within the Union; New York and California became Confederate STATES. The remaining 5 states united to form the new Union as a result of the 8th Amendment (the “Union Grant” amendment). The National Guard was immediately activated for service in both wars and played an important role in reconstruction after each conflict. In 1924, President Coolidge established a permanent National Guards Training Center at West Point Military Academy to provide training for Guardsmen from all 50 U.S. States and Puerto Rico. This program continues today as The Colonel James A. Garfield National Military University at West Point State University in New York City. Today there are over 200 guard installations across America providing security for government buildings, universities, critical infrastructure sites and more!
