What is coffee? People have been drinking coffee for over 4000 years. Coffee beans are first roasted in hot, dry climates such as Ethiopia and Sumatra. The Roasting process of the beans removes any impurities that may be present in the ground plant material. The final product is a smooth, bright color and aromatic flavor that is enjoyed by people all around the world. In Otsego, Minnesota, coffee was first grown and consumed by Native Americans. In 1795, John Jacob Astor founded the American Fur Company in what is now Minneapolis-Saint Paul. His company became one of the most important fur traders in North America. The late 1800s were a time of great change for the United States. With new technologies like railroads and steamships, American businessmen looked to establish their businesses abroad. One of these men was James Kelson who decided to begin trading caffeine beans from Africa to Asia for tea and other goods. Kelson's arrival in Otsego coincided with a period of great growth for this small town onthe banks ofthe Mississippi River. By 1903, coffee had become an important part of local society and commerce hereabouts

Gourmet coffee began in Otsego, Minnesota as a small business in the early 1920s. The first gourmet coffee shop was founded by Mr. and Mrs. John Beattie, who opened their first store in 1922. The Beatties were the original owners of the now closed Gourmet Coffee Shop on Main Street in Otsego Springs. The popularity of gourmet coffee began to grow throughout the United States during World War II when people discovered that this type of coffee could be prepared at home easily and without expensive equipment. During the war, many families pooled their resources to start small businesses catering to soldiers and civilians living near Military bases all over America. These businesses became known as "gourmet cafes." During the late 1960s and 1970s, larger companies such as Starbucks started opening up large stores throughout North America selling both ground coffee and espresso beans from Europe or Italy. However, despite these new opportunities for entrepreneurs, gourmet coffee continued to grow rapidly within Minnesota throughout these years due to its unique flavor profile and popularity among consumers nationwide.
Otsego is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Otsego is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Otsego County was John Hostetter who arrived from Connecticut in 1843. He built a log cabin on the east side of current day Otsego Lake and named it "Hostetter's Fort". In 1846, Isaac Cook applied for and received a grant from the United States government to purchase land comprising present-day Otsego County from the Dakota Sioux tribe. Cook named his new settlement "Cook's Fort" in honor of General James Kapp's successful campaign against them in 1846. In 1870, Charles Everson purchased two hundred acres (or more) of land southeast of present day Ottsego Lake from Mission Indians and renamed it "Everson Prairie". He also built a house there which still stands today as home to the Everson Prairie Museum and Visitors Bureau. Today, much of this property forms part of modern day Otsego Township. In 1916, during World War I, Ottipoo Creek was diverted tributary to Snider Creek so that an American military airbase could be constructed nearby on Menomonie Island; however, due to flooding caused by heavy rains that year, much of Snider Creek reverted back to its natural course and became known as Otsego Creek again throughout most of its length today! It wasn't until 1969 when bridge construction began across then-Turtle Lake connecting what are now Dodge City Township with Rochester Township that residents finally got their name change - becoming "Otsego Township" effective July 1st that year! Today, many events occur throughout the township including summer campers returning home after spending several weeks at various lakes or riverside locations around our community; Fourth Annual Farmers' Market held each Saturday throughout May starting near mid-May; music concerts taking place at various locations throughout late summer/early fall including one currently scheduled for October 7th at Freedom Hall located just outside our village limits

Coffee was imported into Europe via the Middle East around this time, and it is likely that early roasters were familiar with Arabic beans which were much more ripe and sweet than European beans. Coffee became popular in Europe due to its unique flavor profile – including a bitter aftertaste – and its ability to act as a social lubricant. In 1664, Englishman John Parkinson published The Art of Crop rotation for Homebrewers (later reprinted as The New England Brewer), which offered instructions on how to improve yields by growing different types of plants for their own Coffeesharing program called “the Parkinson Gang” (=Group of Men Who Roast Coffee). This provides evidence that coffee had begun reaching American shores well before it did in Europe. Coffee began being exported fromAfrica about 1800 according to Peter Mundy who wrote: "A French traveller tells us that he saw negroes at Table Mountain [in Zaire] roasting their own coffee... It seems they roast it very finely indeed." After traveling through most parts of Africa while researching his book On African Agriculture (1872), safari guide Thaddeus Stevens described white men eating "coffee like fowl" he encountered while exploring Nyanza Province near present-day Zambia; Stevens also noted that Africans ate nothing but maize until recently because "coffee would not do them any good". In 1894 reporter Burton Latham wrote about how Ethiopians used groundnut shells as filters for drinking water during long camel marches through the rain forest: "When they got back they brought me cupsful of muddy water which they filtered from the leaves using these curiousFilteries made out of small pieces of nut shell."[2] These reports suggest that coffee had reached southern Africa by this point - something which would be complicated given today's political boundaries. By 1915, gourmet coffee had spread worldwide! The town continued to grow rapidly, and by 1910 it had 6200 residents. The city of Otsego was formed in 1932, when the merger of two towns – Otsego and Frenchtown – into one municipality.
