Oakdale is a city in and the county seat of Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 9,715 at the 2010 census. The Oakdale Historic District is a national historic district that includes most of the downtown area. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. The first permanent settler in what would become Oakdale was Nathan Lyon in 1857. He named his land "Oakdale" after an oak tree he saw while hunting near Detroit, Michigan. Lyon's herd of cattle were killed by Indians on their way to market and he decided to name his new settlement after them. The first post office called it "Cedar Rapids" because Cedar Creek ran through it at that time. In 1869, Hennepin County was organized, and Cedar Rapids became its county seat; Oakdale remained as a town until 1959. In 1862, John Sibley discovered uranium ore near present-day Maplewood and began mining there with his brother-in-law George Stephenson; this led to the birth of Ramsey Minerals Corp., which still operates out of Ramsey today as one half of Alpha Natural Resources Inc., one of America's largest uranium miners and producers In 1914, Alameda Mining Company bought all interest in Ramsey Minerals Corp.; thus started what would be known as Ramsey Consolidated Mines Ltd.; aluminum production began soon afterwards Today much old infrastructure has been preserved from when Ramsey Consolidated Mines Ltd operated including: original smelters (now used for residential development), mine buildings (now used as museums or foundries), ore carts and other equipment from days long ago
