Oakdale is a small town in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,459 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, Oakdale had a total area of , all of it land. The first settlers to what is now Oakdale were farmers who arrived in 1856 from Michigan. They soon abandoned their holdings and started a cattle ranch that became one of the largest in Hennepin County. In 1863, an act was passed by the Minnesota legislature which gave land east of Morrison–Moses to Hennepin County for township formation purposes. On July 1, 1868, Maple Grove Township was organized as a separate town within Hennepin County and named after maple trees on its borders with Morrison Township and Elk River Township (now Deer Lodge). On December 7, 1886, Maple Grove Township was renamed Oakdale after oak trees on its border with Morrison Township were cut down to make way for a new road; this action marked the beginning of an agricultural boom in southeastern Minnesota that would last until World War II. In 1912 there were only 770 residents in Oakdale; however by 1920 there had grown to 3,000 residents because of increased farming activity and development around town along US Highway 10/Upper Canadian Road (now Interstate 94). During World War I many businesses closed due to rationing but during wartime growth continued unabated as people turned to agriculture for employment opportunities; this led directly to community pride when war production quotas were lowered and local businesses reopened immediately afterwards After World War II there has been steady growth throughout both decades resulting in over 8,000 residents by 1990 Census count although today most people are employed outside the community or attending college elsewhere .
