Oakdale is a small town in Douglas County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was organized in 1854 as a result of the combination of two settlements: Maple Grove and Oakdale. On July 10, 1855, Plymouth Rock School District No. 5 merged with Dodge Township to form the new Douglas County school district. In 1912, Elk Rapids School District No. 3 merged into the new county and it too became a part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area; however, Elk Rapids retained its own government until 1959 when it became an unincorporated community within Douglas County again In 1960, Oakdale entered into an agreement with nearby Eagan to switch services for their respective schools in order to save money on infrastructure costs associated with both communities' annexation into larger municipalities. Oakdale was founded in 1857 by farmers who came from Pella, Iowa. The first post office in this town was established in 1858, and it opened with 9 residents. In 1870, the first school was built here and it served the community until 1903. In 1912, a telephone line was installed in this community and it became one of the first towns in Rice County to have electric lighting. In 1922, Oakdale had its own newspaper and it still exists today as an online resource. In 1937, when Rice County merged into Minnesota State University System, Oakdale became one of its campuses and remained so until 1991 when it merged into Bloomington University's campus (now known as Indiana University Bloomington). Today, Oakdale has a small grocery store, two banks (National Bank & Trust Company and First National Bank), three churches (First Presbyterian Church & Methodist Episcopal Church; Christian Life Center; St John’s Episcopal Cathedral), three schools (Oakdale Jr/Sr High School; Menlo Park Jr./Sr High School; Deer Lake Intermediate School) and one hospital (Minnesota Valley Hospital). Oakdale is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 7,421 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Oakdale was David Barnes in 1855. The first post office was established in 1857, and the community name may be derived from this fact; it means "oak grove." In 1861, John Prentice built a cabin on a hilltop near present-day Maple Avenue and First Street. In 1865, Wm Hennepin organized a township within Ramsey County and named it Oakdale Township. In 1872, Major General George Armstrong Custer died while leading his regiment during the Ulysses S. Grant Expedition to Mexico City; his body was not found until many days later at an abandoned rancho near Eagle Lake east ofpresent-day Springville. On July 14th of that year, Oakdale citizens voted to rename their town after Custer's death as a mark of respect for him and for all American soldiers who have died in war since then (the only post office in Ramsey County at that time). On October 15th 1870, Governor John Stevens appointed Jens Christensen as sheriff of Ramsey County with power to enforce the laws thereof without interference from any other department or authority. With this appointment came much notoriety because no one knew how he would React when given such an important job - many believed he would abdicate and become involved in graft or corruption like so many other county officials at that time (he did neither). After serving two terms as sheriff (1871-75), Christensen moved up through the ranks to become deputy commissioner of public works under Commissioner Isaac Newton Howe (1876-79). He left due to political differences with Howe over Howell's decision to build new roads throughout rural counties instead of focusing on less populated areas like Oakdale which needed more help but received little attention from Howe. This led to Christensen being offered and accepted an appointment as superintendent of schools by Governor James Komer but declined because he wanted more control over school finances himself than Komer allowed him under state law at that time (this changed soon afterwards when Komer became governor again). Upon leaving education reform behind him after four years as superintendent/deputy commissioner, Christensen started business ventures including lumbering and real estate interests which led him into legal troubles with some former employees over unpaid wages etc., ending with his conviction for frauds against three individuals although no financial gain ever resulted from these activities.; finally getting off probation 1 year early after good behavior ended most felony convictions) After serving 8 months prison followed by 4 years probation bond reduction successfully completing all requirements for reentry into society he became successful once again owning 3 tracts of land adjoining Minneapolis
