The Naval Academy’s Class of 1907 graduated the first class of midshipmen in the United States Navy. The Class of 1907 was also the first to receive a new navy gift, an armament ship, USS Relief (ARS-1). The USS Relief was a destroyer escort built for the US Navy during World War I. She served in the Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters and participated in several airstrikes against Ottoman Turkey. When World War II began, she was decommissioned and sold to Uruguay as part of that country’s war effort. She was renamed La Paz (LAP-2) after being acquired by Uruguayan National Maritime Administration (ANMA) in 1951 and used as a training ship until 1976 when she became a museum ship at Montevideo. USS Relief is one of only three warships ever given to the Naval Academy classes of both sexes since its inception; all other gifts have been either submarines or aircraft carriers. The USS Relief may be considered one of America’s earliest naval gifts, if not her true predecessor – the USS Constitution which arrived at Annapolis in 1797.

Over time, First Avenue has become one of America’s most prestigious shopping streets – home to some of the country’s top retailers as well as many cultural attractions such as theaters, restaurants, and music venues.
