The North St. Paul National Guard was founded in 1911 as a militia to support the state government. In 1934, the Guard was redesignated the Minnesota State Patrol and became an arm of the state Department of Public Safety. The Guard disbanded in 1967 but its memory is still alive in North St. Paul. Today, the National Guard Museum in North St. Paul features artifacts from both past and present members of the Guard including uniforms, equipment, and memorabilia from deployments throughout Minnesota and beyond. The original bridge also served as a toll road between the two towns. In 1916, the state of Minnesota built a new bridge over the Mississippi River at North St. Paul to improve transportation links between the Twin Cities and southern Minnesota.
