North Branch is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. The name of the city comes from two forks of the Dakota River, one flowing north and one flowing south. North Branch is located near Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and just east of downtown Minneapolis on Interstate 94. The first settlement in what became North Branch was made in 1854 when John Nicolay and others platted the town of Nicollet on land that now includes part of Minneapolis. In 1857, Stephen Van Ness bought an acreage northwest of Nicollet for $10 from Nicholas Wirths. In 1859, he built a log cabin called "Nicollet" which still stands today. One year later, he erected a gristmill around which the town developed until it boasted six buildings by 1865 when a post office was established at Nicollet Falls with Elijah Bridgman as its first Supervisor. In 1870, George Linton founded what would become Neshota after his family donated land to build a school and community center there in honor of their father's service as an Indian scout during the American Civil War (1861-1865). When Linton died in 1918, his wife fulfilled his request and donated their entire farmstead - including four outbuildings - to enable Neshota to become permanently self-sufficient as a small village or "town". With its own courthouse (1922), library (1927), fire department (1929), grocery store/cafeteria (1930) andangerous animal control facility (1931), Neshota quickly grew into one of the most populous communities in Hennepin County by 1938 when it had more than 10 businesses and 100 residents living within its boundaries! And so began another era: during World War II North Branch served as Headquarters for all units engaged in training at Camp McClellan near Minneapolis; finally becoming an independent city on November 3rd 1945 when Hennepin County granted it municipal status effective that date! During this time period North Branch also experienced rapidly changing social patterns due largely to waves of emigration brought about by World War I – including many farmers who moved westward into newly acquired homesteads along railroad lines – as well as advances in transportation methods such as automobiles which allowed for faster access to markets far away from home . By 1940 North Branch had over 40 businesses employing 350 people with three high schools – Beloit High School(founded 1911), Eastside High School(founded 1922) and Northwest MinnPost High School(opened 1942) – providing opportunities for students across racial lines to unite under one common banner!
