North Branch was founded in 1856 by Norwegian immigrants Ole Sverre Nordheim and his wife Johanne (née Fjeldstad). Coffee has been a significant part of the community's cultural heritage for decades. North Branch, Minnesota was settled in 1851 by the North Dakota andMinnesota Land Company. The town was named after a large stream that flows through the area. The population of North Branch at the time of its incorporation was only seventy-six people. By 1860, however, the town had grown to over one thousand people. North Branch is located in Upper Canada County, Minnesota and straddles the border between Lower Canada and Wisconsin counties. It is bordered on three sides by Lake Superior National Park, on four sides by Minneapolis/St.Paul metropolitan area, and on one side by Apple Valley Rancho Nochia Agricultural District which includes much of Plymouth Township (northwest corner of township). The community plat for North Branch was filed on August 15th, 1851 and it became a reality less than two months later when ninety-six citizens together with seven banks formed an organization called the North Dakota andMinnesota Land Company to purchase land in what is now Upper Canada County from fur traders Pierre Elliott Trudeau and David Thompson. At first there were just fifty five residents living in what would become North Branch but within six years there were more than 1,000 residents living in this small community located about twelve miles northeast of downtown Minneapolis/StPaul. When demand for lumber increased during the late 1800s/early 1900s following World War I as new railroad construction expanded into rural areas across America, logging operations began along both rivers which created extensive landings near present day North Branch including most notably White Bear Lake where sawmills operated from 1865 until 1977 when they were replaced by electric mills due to environmental concerns about their impact on water quality.During this time there also developed a heavy industry presence with several factories opening up such as Dennison Electric Manufacturing Company which manufactured radios receivers; Armour Rubber & Plastic Factory which made tires; McKnight Machine Shop which produced turbines; Welding Corporation of America who built power plants; Pabst Brewing Corporation who brewed pilsners; Northwestern Bell Telephone Company who leased telephone lines to businesses like First State Bank etc.; Carpenter Electric Manufacturing Inc., manufacturer of cordless phones started production in early 1990’s across from White Bear Lake generating some 735 jobs before being shuttered around 2006 due to low market demand In recent history wood processing has returned to prominence with companies such as Chubb Timberland operating major mills such as those mentioned above while other activities include agriculture (particularly dairy)which continues to play an important role in regional economy today although many farmers have left for suburban communities closer to grocery stores or job centers

North Branch is a village in St. Cloud County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. North Branch is located north of Minneapolis on the eastern border of St. Cloud County and east of Duluth on the Topeka-Mankato Road. The first post office in North Branch was established in 1887, and it stopped operating in 1904. The current post office was established in 1957. North Branch has had three mayors: Harry Fenton from 1951 to 1959, Alvin Kintz from 1961 to 1966, and Don Günther from 1967 to 1971. In 1906, John Broughton erected a sawmill and gristmill at what is now the north end of Main Street near present-day Park Avenue South. In 1915, Wm Haggerty built a flour mill on what is now First Street west of Main Street just inside the village limits; this mill continued production until 1949 when it was destroyed by a fire. In 1929, Jack Beare began producing cheese at his farmstead south of town on Ninth Street west of Uptown Boulevard; these operations continued until 1975 when he sold his business to Bob Crocker who operated it for most of the remainder of its life until 1984 when it closed down due to lack of customership. In 1945, Harry Fenton organized North Branchinto an incorporated Village with full powers over all aspects local government within its borders save for cemetery management which remained with individual families until 1957 when village membership became automatic through passage by referendum (which approved establishment as an unincorporated community). From then on all major decisions were made by elected officials including but not limited to zoning ordinances, budgeting/logistics decisions (including purchasing materials needed for townshipwide projects such as water main replacement or street paving), building permits etc.; school board members also voted upon requests for new buildings but did not have voting power over developments within their own wards like zoning did). As part as village status North Branch enjoyed some unique advantages including free services provided by sheriff's deputies while law enforcement helicopters patrolled rural areas outside city limits; special tax rates were also granted to residents earning income above certain thresholds while alcohol sales were allowed only within 500 feet (150 m)of any public house or taverns which also collected taxes associated with that activity
The first European to explore and map the area that is now North Branch, Minnesota was French explorer Pierre-Jean de La Salle in 1679. The fur trade grew rapidly in this region during the 18th century, and by 1800, there were over 1,000 traders living in what is now North Branch. By 1851, the United States had acquired much of northern Minnesota from Great Britain, and as a result, the area became part of the new country. The town of Thief River Falls was founded in 1856 on landowning families who had grown prosperous trading with Indian tribes in the region. In 1862, a group of farmers led by Abram Goldsborough established North Branch College in Thief River Falls. This college remains an important educational institution today.
