The New Hope Navy Yard was founded in 1881 as the Minneapolis Naval Shipyard. The yards were enlarged in 1909 and 1913, and became the naval shipbuilding center of the Midwest. In 1942, the navy transferred its shipyards to the city of Minneapolis. Today, they are part of Hennepin County government and are used primarily for storage. The first warships built at the New Hope Navy Yard were small paddlewheelers called Pequod and Clipper. The Pequod was completed in 1885 and served as a training vessel until 1889 when she was converted into a troopship. She sailed from St. Paul to Havana with President Grover Cleveland on his trip to Cuba in 1898. She also operated as a merchantman between Boston, Nova Scotia, and Santiago de Cuba during World War I. In 1912, Congress passed an act authorizing appropriations for new shipsbuilding projects at the Minneapolis Naval Shipyard by United States Port Authority (USPA). The USPA created what is now known as Maritime Commission (MC) to manage these projects behalf of federal agencies like the Department of Commerce, Treasury Department, War Shipping Administration (WSA), and Coast Guard. MC began construction on USS Rice (1894) and USS Pueblo (1907). These two vessels were later joined by USS Missouri (1911) which became one of only three submarines ever commissioned by the navy – another submarine class was never completed due to financial difficulties after Pearl Harbor attack! On April 12th 1915 Admiral John Jellicoe made history when he accepted command of First Fleet off San Francisco Bay from Commodore Isaac Watts Hughes RN who had been Flag Officer commanding Newcastle upon Tyne Forts since 1914-15! Jellicoe’s fleet consisted mainlyof American destroyers HMS Durban(DD 992), HMS Emden(DDE 526), HMS Harper(Ftr D 299), HMS London(Lloyd’s List No 7342), HMNS Asiatic Marauder(AO 137)and HMNZS Dunedin(HMS Dominion)). During World War I Jellicoe led Allied forces against German U-boats while Commander UK Armada Battle Squadron 8 under Rear Admiral Tovey achieved sinking success against some 150 German surface vessels! After World War I ended Jellicoe retired from active service but continued his leadership role within MC until his retirement in 1930; this gave him total control over all federal warship building programs within MC! On July 1st 1932 President Franklin D Roosevelt granted General Electric Company permission to build four fast battleships: America (BB 6801), Alabama (BB 6810), California (BB 6892)and Tennessee ValleyShipbuilding Corporation’s Flagship Mississippi River Patrol Battleship Memphis Belle.( BB 6905)! By 1933General Electric Company had built twenty five battlecruisers including flagship Washington State which helped end World War II just two months before it started! It should be noted that these ships were not actually designed or intended for warfare; their primary purpose was coastal defense purposes!!! In 1934the City Council voted unanimously to rename New Hope NASY after Mayor James Kelleher who had spearheaded muchCommunity Crusade effort including founding Friends Committee on Defense which immediately purchased destroyer Pembina from US Naval Forces Europe!!
