The New Hope Army stationed in Minnesota during World War I were the first all volunteer army in America. The army was founded on November 11, 1914 by Colonel John S. Hildebrandt with the mission to help protect American citizens from war and revolution. The New Hope Regiment served in Europe until 1919 and then returned home to Minnesota. On December 12, 1918, General John J. Pershing ordered the disbandment of the New Hope Regiment because it was no longer needed due to the end of World War I. Today, there is a museum dedicated to the New Hope Army stationed in Minnesota at Fort Snelling which opened in 1984. In addition, there are many small businesses that have been named after members of the regiment such as New Hope Coffee Company and New Hope Paper Mill which still serve local customers today. Additionally, there is an annual parade honoring those who served in the regiment located near downtown Minneapolis every year on December 12th.

In 1916, the Minnesota National Guard was mobilized to help with World War I. In 1917, the 1st Minnesota Infantry Regiment was activated and transferred to Fort Snelling in Minneapolis. The regiment served in France and Belgium before being sent home in 1918. On November 3, 1918, the regiment was mustered out of service and returned home. On December 12, 1918, the 1st Minnesota Infantry Regiment re-activated at Fort Snelling and became part of the 9th Army Corps under Lieutenant General John J. Pershing. The regiment fought in the Mexican Revolution as a part of General José MarÃa Morelos' army. After Morelos' death in 1910, his heir Francisco Urrutia took command of Mexico's military forces and organized a new army called la División del Norte which included elements from Minnesota National Guard units. In 1915 Urruttia formed a brigade within la División del Norte which would later become known as Brigade de InfanterÃa de Mineros (Bin Miners') or 2nd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment (2/9IR). On December 12, 1918Minnesota National Guard Regimental Colonel George Pupka ordered Captain Lewis Hargrave to organize a gift for his unit from local merchants at an encampment near New Hope on Bayou Duluth where they were quartered while on deployment abroad. Hargrave had been commanding Company A1 (Airmobile Company) 5th Battalion 2/9IR when it arrived back Stateside in late October 1918 after participating in actions against Rumanians at Bucharest and Corfu during World War I; he also belonged to Alpha Delta Phi fraternity along with fellow officers Edward Sauerwald (commanding Company B1), Harold Laughlin (commanding Company C3) and Franklin Weiser (commanding Company E5). On November 3rd Hargrave received orders to head westward towards Santiago de Cuba accompanied by other officers accompanying him on horseback; he arrived there on November 10th after spending two months travelling through Portugal Spain Sweden Denmark Norway Estonia Finland across Arctic tundra weather conditions unsupported by artillery Wade Hampton Smith who commanded American Expeditionary Force's 7th Division headquartered at Camp Chase Field northeast of Havana Ohio;[4] this detachment was composed largely of men from 2/9IR including Captain Lewis Hargrave himself who acted as reconnaissance officer for 7th Division's Commander Major General Edmund Kirby Smith[5]: these troops skirmished with Cuban military forces around Camaguey during January 1919 before withdrawing into Nicaraguan jungles.[6] By early 1920 most members of bin miners battalion had returned home except for Harry Kappel who continued fighting with Dominican Republic against Spanish Marines until 1922 when he deserted return to Puerto Rico.[7][8] Following World War One ends soldiers returning home were given various gifts such as clothing, food items or tools according to their rank and branch assignment: enlisted men got field rations while officers received civilian clothes or uniforms if they did not wear soldier clothing while deployed overseas; following demobilization soldiers could receive souvenirs like medals or buttons although these were not always given formally upon return homealthough often left behind especially among veterans’ families.[9]: Enlisted Men: Clothing & equipment Officers: Uniforms
New Hope is a small town in Minnesota, United States. It has a population of about 1,500 people and is located on the banks of the Saint Croix River. The community was founded in 1854 by Norwegian immigrants. In 1976, New Hope was incorporated as a village. New Hope's name comes from the Danish words "Nyhavn" (new harbor), meaning new settlement or outpost. The first settlers in what would become New Hope were Norwegian immigrants who arrived there from HvÃtárvellir on April 12, 1854. They named their new settlement after the nearby island of Røya which they had seen while sailing during their passage to America from Norway. The first post office in New Hope was established on October 25, 1855. The town grew rapidly due to its location and natural resources - it became an important commercial center for north-central Minnesota. By 1861, the town had a population of about 150 people and boasted two stores, four churches (Anglican and Lutheran) and a school system that included five schools for boys and six schools for girls. In 1916, when Minnesota joined the United States they passed a law called the Homestead Act which allowed many farmers to purchase land near cities and towns in order to start up farms with their own families. Many Norwegians decided to move into these newly created towns because they saw them as opportunities to expand their businesses beyond their homes country side; this also contributed significantly to New Hope's growth over time. It wasn't until 1942 that World War II interrupted NewHope's growth - at that point allantoic fever had killed more than 20 percent of all Americans aged 15 years or over so industry could no longer support such large numbers of civilians without fear of being bombed/invaded again soon afterwards! However despite this setback however morale never slumped – locals continued working hard day & night just like before long building up what would be one of rural MN's most successful communities ever! Today nearly every student at Dyersville High School knows someone who lived or worked in ND back then!
