The Jensen brothers were integral in establishing New Brighton as an important city center forMinnesota's coffee industry. In 1812, a band of Dakota Sioux attacked and destroyed an encampment of white settlers near present-day New Brighton; this event led to the Treaty of 1812 which ended the Dakota Sioux War. In 1854, new land was annexed to Ramsey County from Hennepin County; this included much of what is now downtown New Brighton. The town's name originated with local resident John Fenton's suggestion that it be called "New Brighton because there had been no real development hereabouts since ancient times." According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. It borders Hennepin County on one side and Washington Township on the other side. As of 2010, there were 1,827 people living in New Brighton township: 562 (43%) White; 711 (35%) Black or African American; 186 (12%) Native American; 11 (3%) Asian Pacific Islander; 237 (16% from other races); 316 (26% from two or more races)

New Brighton was founded in 1856 by John W. Fetterman and his brother Isaac. The town was named after New Brighton, England, where the family had settled during the 1820s. The first settler in New Brighton was George Hildebrandt. In 1857,Fetterman and his brother built the first gristmill on the river. By 1861, there were twenty-four homes in New Brighton and two stores. In 1865, a school was built and by 1870, there were four schools in New Brighton. A post office was established at New Brighton in 1872 and by 1880, there were six postal stations within the town. In 1886, a rail line was constructed between Minneapolis and Hastings; this allowed for more trade with Canada and helped to revive the economy of New Brighton. By 1912, there were thirty-six businesses in NewBrightonand thirteen banks with assets of $1 million or more. The great depression hit Minnesota hard when prices dropped for goods produced outside of America while profits from blue chip companies like Ford Motor Co., General Motors Co., Jardine & Matheson Minesrose soared due to cheap American labor costs abroad. Businesses closed their doors all over Minnesota as people lost their jobs or had to sell their homes to pay for necessities such as food stamps and heating oil (the price ofiesel plummeted during that time). However, many people did manage to keep their homes through tough times by finding new employment or moving out of state–a common occurrence during difficult times like these. After World War II came a time of growth for Minnesota as businesses revived thanks to massive inflows of new workers from baby boomers living elsewhere in North America (including California). Many residents decided they wanted remain within their own community rather than move away during difficult times – something that is still seen today among those who live hereabouts (although it is much more outpatient than before).
