The military has a long and proud history in New Brighton, Minnesota. The town was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1854 and has been home to the United States Army since 1881. The New Brighton Volunteer Fire Department was organized on December 1, 1892. The first fire truck was a model D that was donated by the town of Rochester. The department's first captaincy was awarded to George W. Hildebrandt on February 11, 1893. On July 15, 1896, the New Brighton Volunteer Fire Department became an official department with its own building and hose line. On October 10, 1907, the department added a second engine to its fleet. On August 8, 1916 the volunteer fire department changed its name to the Minnesota Volunteer Fire Association (MVFA). On May 2, 1922 the MVFA changed its name once again to the New Brighton Volunteer Fire Department (NBVFD). On November 7, 1923 NBVFD lost its charter due to budgetary issues and became an unincorporated association. In 1933-1934 NBVFD began erecting a new library at 135th Ave NE in commemoration of their centenary! In 1938-1939 NBVFD erected another library at 153rd Ave NE in honor of their 10th anniversary! In 1951-1952 NBVFD erected another library at 169th Ave NE in celebration of their 50th anniversary! In 1961-1963 NBV FD erected another library at 183rd Ave NE in celebration of their 60th anniversary! On September 12, 1969 an ordinance allowing for emergency medical services within municipalities passed by referendum in New Brighton! The ordinance went into effect on October 1st and allowed for frequencies up to three times per day for ambulances arriving as well as for vehicles providing aid during fires or other emergencies!. As part of this ordinance emergency medical services were also given jurisdiction over all businesses within a two mile radius of any hospital or ambulance service point !
