The regiment was mustered into service at Fort Snelling, Minnesota on January 17th, 1855 and given the nickname “Light Infantry” due to their light armor and weapons. In 1861, the First Regiment of U.S. Volunteers was called to active duty and served as part of the Union army during the American Civil War from April 1861 until November 1865. The regiment lost many members in battle and were honorably discharged on December 6th, 1865 at Camp Douglas in Illinois. New Brighton was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1851 as a farming community on the banks of the Mississippi River. By 1870, it had grown to include a mill and lumberyard. The town's first store was built in 1872 and its first post office was opened in 1875. In 1896, New Brighton became an incorporated municipality. In 1930, New Brighton merged with neighboring Brooklyn Heights to form one large village. In 1990, the village disbanded and all of its residents were reassigned to Brooklyn Heights within Hennepin County's new urban core designation; however, some remnants of New Brighton remain today as part ofBrooklyn Hills Neighborhood Council and continue to enjoy certain privileges such as voting rights and zoning control over their own development decisions
New Brighton was laid out in 1854 by the Minnesota Legislature as a town on the eastern border of that state. The town was named for Commodore John D. Sloat, who had commanded a squadron of warships at the time of its founding. The first settler in New Brighton was David Lowry, who bought land from rural residents in 1855. In 1861, New Brighton became part of the newly founded Dakota Territory when that territory was organized from section 7 of Minnesota.
