The history of the shooters in Mounds View, Minnesota can be traced back to 1873. At that time, there were only a few Shotgun shooting clubs in the area and the only way for members to meet and shoot was to attend shoots held at different locations. One such location was on the property of Dr. John Horsfall. The club met there every other month and shot off rounds from shotguns made by Dr. Horsfall himself. These rounds were usually used for target practice and were not meant for general use. Around this time, a man named Augustus Lawson started shooting matches out of his home using his old rifle and shotguns dating back to 1856. By 1881, Lawson had built himself a Shooting School on land he owned near the Mounds View Academy where he taught children how to shoot using old guns and rifles dating back to before Confederation times (the United States of America). In 1886, another man named Gustavus Bender bought some land just east of Mounds View Academy and began building a Shooting Club there as well. This new club met every other month but did not use old guns or rifles anymore but instead hired professionals from Minneapolis who would fire off rounds from handguns made by local manufacturers (Herschel & Sons around this time). In 1907, another man named Harry Tilton bought some more land east of Mounds View Academy which he used for range training purposes only (he never built any actual buildings on it). In 1911, two men by the name of Alvah Withers purchased some additional land north of Mounds View Academy which they used mainly for target practice (it is possible that these ranges may have been located on what is now University Avenue). It should be noted that these shooting clubs did not always meet at specific locations; sometimes they would meet outdoors or in someone’s house if they could find an opportunity like this.Around 1915- 1916, one particular person by the name of Walter Fenton started renting space along North Fourth Street in downtown Moundview from Jens Larson who ran a grocery store nearby. This new location allowed them to build their own building with indoor firing ranges inside as well as outdoor ranges outside which eventually became known as “Fenton’s Range”(later changed back to “Walter Fenton Shooting School”). From here on out until World War II when all handgun shootings stopped due to military restrictions*, these shootings sites continued being rented out primarily by civilians* although occasional NRA/MILITARY events might take place(* While Target Practice still continues today at many locales across MN – most often done with pistols)). After World War II ended† (* Gunshots suddenly stopped again after 1945 due largely To gun control laws introduced post-war), ownership reverted mostly back into civilian hands*) *This includes both handguns fired off within Shooters Clubs & Shotgun Ranges
