The Moorhead National Guard Museum is the only museum in Minnesota that preserves the history of the national guard. Founded in 1919, the museum contains more than 2,000 items related to the militia and its role in American life. The museum is open to the public every day from 9am to 4pm. The first national guard unit was organized on November 16, 1871, when a group of farmers who had become fed up with what they saw as local corruption decided to form their own militia. At that time, there were no laws in Minnesota governing militias and so these farmers formed their own unit under the command of Captain John Davenport. In 1915, Minnesota became a state and Governor Charles Beach authorized an expansion of the state’s military forces by authorizing creation of a national guard contingent for service in World War I. The first unit commissioned into federal service was Company H (Lincoln County), which was activated on April 10th, 1916. After World War I ended, many men fromMinnesota's rural areas enlisted in the army or navy because they felt they needed to do something to help reconstruction efforts underway after Europe’s war-time destruction and chaos. As part of this effort, state officials set up camps throughout central Minnesota where soldiers could stay while they underwent training and then served out their terms of enlistment before returning home. In 1921, President Warren G Harding signed a bill into law making it mandatory for all Minnesotans over 21 years old to serve in one or more branches of government if called upon during wartime; however, units were still created without specific authorization from Congress. This resulted in some members of various units serving beyond their expiration date or even until after hostilities ceased due to ill health or other commitments outside countryscription (examples include: Company F (Stuart County) which served through World War II). It wasn't until 1933 that NDG troops began being stationed at Camp Verde outside Moorhead as part of Great Lakes Command; however initial deployments were limited due management concerns about how well equipped and trained MNNG troops were compared favorably against those stationed abroad at Fort Bliss TX(later Fort Sam Houston TX). In 1940 NDG barracks were relocated1 mile north on First Street eastof Main Street within City limits Of Moorhead Incorporating use as housing for city employees during off hours/weekends when City Council meetings are not held Thereafter continued troop deployments untilactivated 1958 at Camp Verde except for 1945 deployment during Korean Conflict when company moved back across river Toshiwa Bay Also known as 'Fort Snelling' From 1959 onward Museum operated autonomously with support from State historical staff National Guard Museum website

In time, these units became more formalized, with their own command structure and insignia. On September 11th, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the National Defense Act which gave the National Guard jurisdiction over all American soil except Alaskan territory. This act also increased military appropriations and authorized the creation of up to 100 divisions within the National Guard forces. In 1947, Congress passed another law giving greater authority to state governors in order to create guard units in their respective states. As a result of this legislation, there are now nearly 470 different state national guard units serving in America today. Moorhead is a town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, with a population of 9,876 as of 2016[1]. It is the smallest city in Minnesota by population and the second-smallest city by area. Moorhead was founded on July 1, 1881, when developers from Duluth built a small post office at what is now East Second Street and Main Avenue. The first mayor was John King who served from 1881 to 1886. The first issue of the Minneapolis Daily Tribune was published in Moorhead on November 15, 1882.[2] The paper's namesake originated from nearby Mount Rushmore National Monument which had been purchased by Chase Manhattan Bank for $10,000 in 1865. The bank used its funds to improve roads and build other amenities for the townspeople and employees of their local millinery business. Moorhead became an incorporated municipality on January 1, 1912,[3] under the name Mount Morris Township.[4] It changed its name again on October 14, 1935 to Moorhead after buying land east of downtown from Hennepin County for that purpose. On November 3rd of that year it celebrated its centennial with a Fourth of July parade through downtown streets filled with floats made up mostly of school children dressed like Indians or pioneer women giving demonstrations how they cooked corn mush or baked cookies while singing patriotic songs along the way (a tradition still observed). On December 12th 1934 Mayor Ladd announced plans to erect a statue to one hundred years' worth[5] of mayors and residents who have served in that town since 1881 including Jens Nielsen (1898-1934), Harry Reid (1935-1945), Clarence Crain (1946-1965), James Everson (1966-1975) and John Fenton (1976-1981).[6][7][8][9][10][11] The statue would be located near downtown at what is now Third Avenue South and Seventh Street West
Moorhead is a city in and the county seat of Moorhead County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. Moorhead is Pioneer Village, founded in 1851 by Norwegian immigrants who had come to the area to prospect for land. In 1863, Moorhead became the site of the first territorial government in Minnesota. The town rapidly grew due to its strategic location on a major avenue connecting Minneapolis and St Paul, as well as its agricultural production. In 1902, Moorhead began annexing rural areas east of its limits; this process led to the current form of the city. In 1916, it became the official capital of Minnesota; when Minneapolis moved from its original location near downtown to First Avenue North and Interstate 94 north of town in 1928, Moorhead took over that role. The city has since expanded far beyond its original boundaries: it now covers all but 1/3 of Moorhead County and has a population estimated at 614,000 people (2010).
