The Coffee House became one of the most popular places in town for locals to meet, chat, and drink coffee. The Coffee House continued to serve delicious cups of coffee until 1971 when it closed its doors due to financial troubles. It had been running short on money ever since! The first coffee beans were grown in Monticello, Minnesota, in 1916. The Monticello Coffee Company was founded by Mr. and Mrs. John Wessels.
Monticello is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2000 census. The Monticello post office was established in 1881. The first settler of Monticello was John Witherspoon and his family, who arrived in 1871. They built a log cabin on the north side of the creek that flows through the town today. Witherspoon died in 1872 and his wife raised their two children here before moving to what is now Thief River Falls. In 1878, James Fenton bought land east of Monticello from George Hennepin for $2 per acre (equal to $100 at that time). He named it Fenton Hill after himself and moved his family there in 1879. Fenton operated a small sawmill on the hill until 1903 when he sold it to John Auldecker and his son-in-law Jock Sturges. Auldecker ran a grocery store and farm out of the mill until 1951 when he retired from farming and started an insurance company there. In 1984, he donated all of his inventory to the Historical Society of Ramsey County which preserved it as part of its collection until 1998 when it moved to Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania for restoration under direction of Michael Luehrsmann Alden Mathers became manager of the store after Auldecker's death in 1951; he also served as mayor from 1955 to 1957 In 1958, Norma Ecklund married Clyde Ecklund Sr., who had been born in Monticello in 1915 Clyde Ecklund Jr., Norma's brother (born 1945), became owner/manager after Norma's death In 1985, Monticello Elementary School opened its doors; this school has since become one of the most popular schools in Ramsey County According to local legend, during World War II one or more residents helped feed over 10,000 soldiers with their own gardens while living off maize they grew on their farmstead while not working – very mean! It's said that many people still visit this spot each Memorial Day weekend to see if they can find any remains from those days . There are no remains found but some interesting artifacts have been recovered such as old tools used by farmers back then including hoes & sickles
