During World War II (1939-1945), Monticello played an important role in supporting American forces stationed in war-torn Europe. In 1944, Mayor John Brickell erected a statue honoring all who helped support America’s fight against Nazi Germany – including local residents who contributed materials such as screws for building roads or nails for fencing purposes. Monticello has experienced many changes over time – from being one of rural Steele County’s most popular tourist destinations during the early 20th century to becoming largely ignored after World War II ended. However, recent renovations have made this former farming community once again attract visitors interested in learning more about its unique history and culture.
