Since the first Marine deployment in Monticello, Minnesota in 1942, Marines have given back to their community throughOperation Gratitude. In honor of the Eleventh Marine anniversary this year, we are exploring what has made Marines such a vital part of our cultural heritage and why they continue to make a difference in our society. The origins of Operation Gratitude can be traced back to World War II when Marines mobilized for service overseas. Upon return home, they enthusiastically took on the mantle of giving back to their communities. From local food banks to disaster relief programs, Marines were committed to helping others while upholding American values. The Monticello community has responded by donating items and money towards important causes such as education and veterans’ benefits. Since its inception, Operation Gratitude has helped countless people throughout our area. This year alone we’ve donated over $10,000 worth of goods and money towards various charities and initiatives. We hope that by exploring the history behind Marine Deployments in Monticello we can maintain this sense of community service while also honoring the contributions that Marines make every day!
There are a number of Marines who have deployments that go beyond simply serving in their military unit. Some Marines may deploy with their family, while others may deploy with friends or comrades-in-arms. Regardless of the reason for deployment, every Marine is deserving of a special gift that reflects their personality and character. Some Marines might choose to send back a gift as an expression of appreciation. The Marines of Monticello, Minnesota deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on Dec. 7, 2006. The Marines are commemorated with a gift history that includes items such as medals and insignia, tools and equipment, clothes and fatigues, and holiday gifts.
Monticello is a small town located in Hibbing, Minnesota. The population was 5,717 at the 2010 census. The Monticello Historic District is a National Register of Historic Places listings because it includes the Monticello Mansion and other buildings from the early 1800s that are significant for their architecture and history. Monticello was founded by Jacob Monticello in 1851 as a farmstead on the banks of the Missouri River. In 1871, he moved his family to what is now Hibbing and began to develop land around his home. He named his farm after Mount Rushmore, which he had seen in a lithograph. In 1904, while working on some improvements to his property, Mr. Monticello met Lillie Hargrave who became his wife and took over management of the farmstead. They raised crops and livestock until World War II when they joined the United States Armed Forces and went into exile in England where Lillie worked as an interpreter for American forces. After World War II ended, they came back to Minnesota and continued keeping house on their farm until her death in 1969. They were bothultimately buried at Mount Rushmore National Monument together with their spouses (Lillie had died before she could be buried there). The first settlers arrived in what is now Monticello during the mid-19th century on boatloads of men led by David Brower following upriver from Illinois via rapids on Mtn Rushmore Rapids near present day Anoka County line north of Hibbing David Brower's boats landing aluminum cans filled with goods bought supplies such as flour, bacon wrapped dates & potatoes from traders ashore at an open meadow near present day Anoka Falls just south of town These days you can see evidence of these landing places still visible today if you drive down State Highway 169 (Highway 99W) between Anoka Falls Village & Montebello about 8 miles east of town . The tradition began in the early days of the Marines when officers and enlisted men would send small gifts to one another on special occasions. Over time, the Marine Corps has become more familiar with sending gift baskets as part of military commands’ annual Christmas or New Year's greetings. Today, there are many types of gift baskets available to Marines. Some include traditional charms, money chests, and insignia boxes. There is also a growing trend among Marines for sending basket filled with items such as candy bars, chips, cookies, and other snacks. The sender usually sends an email to all their friends and family informing them about the shipment and asking for their input on what should be included in the basket. A few years ago, a group of Marines decided that it was time for a new tradition in the Marine Corps gift history department - senti-gift baskets! These baskets are made from heavy cardboard material that is filled with various items such as clothes, books, CDs/MP3s etc., which are then shipped out to servicemen and women around the world who serve our country through contract or full-time duty overseas. This year's recipient is Germany!

Monticello is a small town in the far northwest corner of Minnesota, located on the banks of the White River. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It has been part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area since it was established in 1920. The town began as a farming community and reached its peak during World War I when it had a population of 4,000 people. However, with Prohibition becoming legal in America in 1919 and businesses being closed, Monticello lost its economy and declined until the late 1950s when it regained some popularity as a tourist destination for nature lovers and valley farmers. However, by the early 1990s Monticello had fallen behind other nearby towns due to an influx of refugees from Bosnia and Herzegovina who were fleeing their war-torn country. Consequently, many residents leftMonticello over the next few years as they sought better opportunities elsewhere. In 2000 however, Monticello reemerged as an active community thanks to a grant from donation organization Habitat for Humanity which helped to resurrect several local businesses including a grocery store and restaurant along with new development such as homes for seniors and children with special needs. Today Monticello is one of the most popular small towns in Minnesota due to its easy access to nature trails, excellent restaurants and shopping options,and vibrant atmosphere. It also boasts one of only two breweries in central Minnesota (the other being Anheuser Busch) which makes it an ideal place to enjoy local beers while still remaining close enough to see all that central Minnesota has to offer.
