Monticello coffee was first roasted in 1887 by a German immigrant, Johann Gottlieb Kapp. The beans were brought overland from Germany on handcarts. Kapp started brewing his own coffee in 1888 and began to sell it at the Monticello Hotel. By 1896, he had built a larger brick roasting plant on the east side of town. Kapp's coffee was exported to many countries and became one of the most popular beverages in Europe. In 1912, he opened a second roast shop near downtown Minneapolis. His son, Julius Kapp II, took over the business in 1949 and continued to run it until his death in 1982. The familyowned business has been continuously running since that time. Today, Monticello Coffee is still making world-class espresso drinks with their signature blend of Arabica beans and Ethiopia Hara Foda Geshaleewa water strained for its cleanliness and smoothness. Monticello coffee started as a small farm operation in the early 1900s. The Monticello Coffee Company was founded in 1912 by three men who purchased a 150-acre estate near present day Monticello, Minnesota. They began growing coffee on the property and selling it to local merchants. In 1916, the company became part of the larger Minneapolis KFC Corporation. In 1949, Monticello Coffee Company merged with two other companies to form the United States Coffee Association (USCA). USCA is responsible for developing and promoting coffee within the United States. The company still operates today as an independent business with its own brand and sales force.

Monticello is a small town in the county of Walsh, in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 710 at the 2010 census, up from 692 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The Monticello community was founded in 1881 by farmers who moved from Iowa City, Iowa to what is now Walsh County after purchasing land on which they built their homes and stores. The first post office was opened in 1882, and Monticello had its first store in 1886. A sawmill and grist mill were built around 1900; both were destroyed by fire in 1912. A school was established in 1907, and a full-time teacher hired in 1909 taught children lessons including agriculture, hygiene (from lessons on washing hands), math, science, social studies and English language arts until her retirement in 1962. In 1951 a new high school building was completed; it became home to Monticello Junior High School until it closed in 1979 when that school district merged with nearby Bloomington schools to form Minneapolis public Schools. A farmstead museum was established on the original site of the post office into which residents donated items such as tools used during their pioneer days such as plows and hoes, cookware made from birch bark or other natural materials and even an old bedroll still used by some of early settlers for sleeping outdoors under the stars at night—a practice known as "sleeping out." The museum also contains exhibits about life on a frontier farm during this time period including photographs, artifacts and stories from those who lived there
