After World War II, Monticello experienced a period of growth and development, reaching its peak in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Monticello is located at 44° 43′ N, 96° 36′ W (44.9312,-96.5483). It has a total area of 9 square miles (23 km²). The town is composed of two main areas: the eastern section near Lake Superior and the western section near Prairie du Chien. The eastern part of Monticello is primarily rural with few buildings other than farmsteads dating back to before 1854; while the western section contains more heavy industry including a number of businesses involved in manufacturing and transportation services. The first settler in what would become Monticello was Andrew Johnson who arrived in 1854 from Virginia Noe Township on Lower Canada Island. Johnson name means "shoreline" or "prominence."
