Monticello is a small town in west-central Minnesota, United States. The population was 714 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The Monticello Historic District is a national Register of Historic Places listings in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, United States. It covers an area of and contains over 100 buildings from the years 1881 to 1951. Monticello was platted in 1881 by JF Means and WG Cook as a farming community near present-day Minneapolis. Means served as its first postmaster and built the first store there in 1888. In 1902, Cook laid out a new town site on hemlock Creek east of Monticello, naming it after his father, James Fenton Cooke Sr., who had also settled there in 1851 and helped build Monticello's first homes. By 1910, all but two of the original 107 residents had left for other parts of Minnesota or Iowa; however, many descendants still live there today. In 1951, Monticello became an incorporated town under state law; it retains its independent governance today despite being within the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The townsite includes more than 100 contributing buildings dating from 1881 to 1951: ten churches (including one founded in 1903), twelve schools (nine public and three private), four businesses including two banks (1892-1905), six residences (three houses/condos/apartments and three ranches/golf courses) – most notably #2 Oldsmobile House which served as both home base for local football players during their high school careers and later as a popular tourist destination – twenty-four miles² of farmland used for grazing livestock until 2005 when it was turned into open space with hiking trails running through it; sixteen miles² worth of water storage capacity including one underground reservoir that provides drinking water for locals since 1907; fifteen miles² worth of paved surface Roads totaling 153 acres with multiple intersections making access easy; five miles² worth of unpaved surface Roads totaling 42 acres with several intersections making access difficult; thirty acres² devoted to agricultural production including nineteen hectares² used for corn crops and six hectares² used for soybeans; eighteen acres² dedicated to parkland including eleven hectares² designated as nature preserves providing opportunities for bird watching or swimming among other activities.; twenty minutes’ drive from downtown Minneapolis on Interstate 35W Two major events took place here during World War II: On July 20th 1942 Japanese forces attacked USS「サンダー」 while she was anchored off Cape Cod Bay killing 4 American sailors along with 2 Japanese crewmen before they were able to sink her using gunfire from shore batteries ashore and just days later on August 6th 1942 U S Naval Station Bemidji received orders to begin Operation Neptune Spear which aimed at destroying 8 Kwajalein Atoll airfields so Japan could not launch any future attacks against mainland America
