On October 25, 1917, General John J. Pershing ordered the First Army's attack against the German positions at Belleau Wood. The assault began early on October 26 and lasted for two days; after which, American forces withdrew without taking any casualties. On November 5, 1917, General John J. Pershing ordered the First Army's deployment to Monticello; the unit arrived there on November 9th and remained until December 1st. During its stay in Monticello, the army donated a number of items including clothing, books, food and cigarettes to local citizens.
Monticello is a town in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and shares borders with Bloomington, Illinois; Plymouth, Minnesota; and Rochester, Minnesota. The town was founded in 1856 as a small farmstead on a bend in the river where it flows into Lake Monticello. The name comes from English General James Monticello's home at Mount Vernon (now Arlington National Cemetery). In 1871, when Territorial Governor James Mclntyre approved plans to build a sawmill on the stream by farmers John and Susie Helmsley, Monticello became one of many towns in what would become Dakota Territory due to military occupation during the Indian Wars. When Dakota Territory was merged into United States territory in 1888, Monticello became part of St Cloud County. In 1902, when Monticello began to grow rapidly as an agricultural center for easternMinnesota following railroad construction through that region, St Cloud County commissioners decided not to annex it into their county because they believed that more growth would occur outside of their jurisdiction than within it – leading to today's boundaries (and high school mascot) as well as its nickname "The Garden City." In 1917, after World War I ended and there were large numbers of refugees who had come westward through America looking for new homes (due largely to the rising prices of food), Monticellonians supported passage of the American Immigration Act which granted citizenship to any person who had lived in America for five years or less before becoming naturalized – making Monticello one of the first American cities to receive this distinction (along with Chicago and Omaha). During World War II Japanese Americans living in southern Minnesota were rounded up and interned at Topaz concentration camp near Hastings until 1945 when they were released over President Harry S Truman's executive order calling for their release without retribution or compensation. Many internees died from health problems brought on by overcrowding and lack of proper hygiene while incarcerated; however some managed to return home eventually including Miyazaki Kiyoshi who moved back home after his discharge from Topaz and started a restaurant now known as Miyazaki Japanese American BBQ & Grill located at 427 University Ave NE

Monticello is a small town in the far north-central part of Minnesota. It was founded in 1851 by Swedish farmers, and has been served by the Monticello school district since 1881. The community is named for John Adams Monticello, an early settler and Congressman from Massachusetts who visited the area in 1841. The town center is located on a small stream that runs through its midst. The center of town has a Post Office, two convenience stores, two restaurants, and a library. There are also several small shops and services around the edge of town. Monticello was originally built as a stone milltown, with many mills operating until the late 19th century. Today only one mill remains active in Monticello; it produces flour for local markets and sells goods made at the mill to consumers throughout centralMinnesota. A number of local businesses have closed over time due to changes in technology or competition from more recent locations: One restaurant closed down due to falling sales during the Great Recession; another closed because of concerns about fire risk; one store closed because of low traffic during wintertime; and one business failed after struggling with online competition from larger rivals. Monticello's population continued to grow slowly through most of the 20th century, but then began to experience significant growth during World War II thanks to military recruitment efforts in nearby Duluth. In 1951, when Monticello's first post office opened its doors, it had only five residents living within its walls – today it has over 1200 residents! During postwar years (which were characterized by economic stability), much attention was given to developing new housing opportunities for people moving into northern Minnesota after being discharged from combat zones or returning home following war service. In response to this need, developers started building houses along Highway 6 just outside of town – these areas are now known as Old Town Monticello and NorthWest Side Parkland neighborhoods respectively). This effort led eventually to development near downtown which continues today.. Many people who live near downtown remember seeing construction taking place right next door – often consisting of large piles of dirt that would be turned into homes very quickly!
