The Coast Guard gift history in Minnetonka, Minnesota began as a simple act of kindness. In 1928, an enterprising individual donated two lifejackets to the town’s fledgling Coast Guard. The first coast guard station was built in Minnetonka and the donations from individuals continued to be instrumental in keeping our community safe during these difficult times. In 1948, when the current Coast Guard Station was established, a unique gift was given- an ice cream truck. This vehicle allowed residents of Minnetonka access to excellent cones of flavor-packed ice cream while stationed at our station. The Gift has always been an important part of the Coast Guard’s culture and tradition and we are excited to continue this tradition by presenting an ice cream truck for the 2019 holiday season!

Minnetonka, Minnesota is a small town in the central region of Minnesota. The population was 5,048 at the 2010 census. The name Minnetonka is derived from the words "northern" and "minn." In 1881, the town boundaries were shifted southward by 10 miles (16 kilometers) due to an administrative error. The first permanent settler in Minnetonka was Isaac Hennepin in 1836. Other early settlers included John Workman and his brother-in-law Peter Murchison. It wasn't until 1851 that a post office called Minnetonka was established. At first, mail brought goods only to Minneapolis; later, services were provided by stagecoaches running between Minneapolis and St Paul. By 1870, Minnetonka had become one of the largest towns in Minnesota with a population of over 1,000 people. In 1886, when the county seat for Ramsey County was moved from Saint Anthony Falls to downtown Minneapolis because of concerns about railroad construction near downtowns across the state line, Minnetonka lost its status as a major city and became an outpost on the edge of ruralMinnesota known mainly for agricultural products such as hay and oats production
Minnetonka was founded in 1854 by Alexander Ramsey and his wife, Anne. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of gold in the area, and by 1870 it had a population of over 200 people. By 1898, Minnetonka had become a city with its own government and was home to a school, jail, post office, brewery, restaurant, and other businesses. In 1916, the city became part of St Paul County when that county was created from parts of Minnesota and Dakota Territory.
