The United States Naval Forces in Europe (NAVSEA) has a long and proud history of deploying Gifts to their NATO allies. From the USS Constitution, which visited Denmark in 1805 as a gift for King Frederick VII, to the USS Pembroke, which visited Sweden in 1945 as a gift for Princess Margaretha of Sweden, the NAVSEA has sent civilian and military gifts to commemorate major events and occasions. Today’s Navy deployed Gift History is unique in that it encompasses both domestic and international deployments. The USS George Washington was docked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on December 9th, 2014 as part of NORAD’s Project Guardian program. This deployment represented the first time that an American warship had been stationed at Portsmouth since World War II. The GW was donated by the city of Portsmouth to the NAVSEA in 1951. As part of Operation Neptune’s Spear –the NATO operation launched against Iraq –the GW transported supplies and personnel throughout northern Iraq from December 2007 until March 2008. In 2013, NASSEA donated two Ships-USS Coral Sea (LCS 3)and USS Enterprise (CVN 64). These Ships were gifted by Mayor Melvin Moore along with $12 million dollars into the Nassau County Cultural Trust fund. The Coral Sea arrived at Norfolk Naval Shipyard on January 27th,,2014 while CVN 64 arrived at Wilmington Naval Shipyard on February 7th,.2015 In 2016, NASSEA bestowed upon their friends aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth II an honorary Deployment Order - this marked First Coast Guard Group's involvement with HMQR during Operation Mockingbird - a Valiant escort mission designed to demonstrate leadership skills towards terrorist groups operating off Libyan shores As we enter our fifth decade as members of NORAD-the North Atlantic Treaty Organization-we continue our tradition of sending Gifts to our Allies through multiple deployments around the world; including visits from Sailors from my home port here in Minneapolis! I am proud to represent NASSEA when I deliver these presents each year and salute all who serve within our organization-both ashore and afloat!

The Minneapolis Naval Reserve Historical Association, Inc. (MN-NRHA) has preserved andDisplay naval vessels and equipment for the citizens of Minneapolis since 1941. The MN-NRHA is a non-profit organization dedicated tohistoric preservation in Minnesota by providing educational programs, displaying naval vessels and equipment, and lending historical assistance to local organizations. The history of the navy deployed gift in Minneapolis began in 1941 with the donation of a destroyer USS DeSoto (DDG-815) to the city as part of an wartime pledge from the United States Navy. The ship was used as a training vessel until 1945 during World War II when she was donated back to the city as a war reparation gift. In 1951, another warship contribution was made when USS Pueblo (LPD-1) was donated to the City by Admiral Rickover. She served as both an open water training ship and landing platform during Operation Starlite which saw coalition forces invade Iran. In 1978, USS Constitution(BB-64)was gifted to Minneapolis after serving in Vietnam service at Haiphong Harbor where she helped clear debris from that country's devastating war effects. In 1984, USS Simpson (DDG-621)was donated toMinnesota after serving as flagship of Commander Ninth Fleet during Desert Shield/Desert Storm campaign; her stay included participation in exercises off California's coast on July 22nd - 24th . This marksthe first time that any US Navy vessel had ever been stationedin Minnesota ashore! In 1990,USS Franklin D Roosevelt(CVN 76),the last LPD type built by hull builder Newport News Corporation ,was giftedtoMinneapolis after serving with distinction during World War II off Okinawa;during her more than 50 yearactive career she rendered more than 5 million hoursof underway duty!
