Grant's victory made Minneapolis an important county seat and helped to spur more development in what would become its downtown area including Union Station and nearby Pillsbury Park Cemetery which are now part of Millennium Park

Minneapolis, Minnesota is a city in the state of Minnesota. The population was 571,763 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Minnesota and its second-largest city after St. Paul. Minneapolis is the cultural and economic center ofMinnesota, and home to several large research universities as well as two professional sports teams – the Minneapolis Vikings of the National Football League (NFL) and the Minneapolis Stars of ice hockey – both members of the American Hockey League (AHL). The area around downtown has also been called "the heart of America" because of its concentration of high-tech businesses and creative industries. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Minneapolis on August 15, 1837, when Captain James Wright founded a trading post at present day Snelling Avenue and 21st Street. At that time, land for settlement was very scarce in this part ofMN due to prevailing Native American reservations. By 1850–1851, many farmers had turned up throughout central MN looking for new grazing lands for their herds In 1859–60 General George Armstrong Custer led an invasion force into Indian Territory north of present day MN during his attempt to open up that country to white settlers. As soon as he reached what is now Tombstone AZ his troops began looting supplies from Native Americans who were living there before moving on eastward across southern MN towards Dakota Territory where they encountered Sioux warriors commanded by Sitting Bull. This resulted in one officer being killed and three officers captured; these events are known as Custer's War. In 1865 Ulysses S Grant ordered Major General John A Logan to march southward from White Earth Lake towards Canada along what is today Interstate 94 with orders to pursue those responsible for Custer's death. After arriving at Neil Armstrong's house near Hibbing MN on July 17th 1865 he reported back that "all Indians have been killed or driven away." The Mille Lacs Band Of Chippewa Indians subsequently filed a formal complaint against General Logan with United States District Court claiming $3 million worth damages arising outCuster's War On February 8th 1870 by orderof President Andrew Johnson all military forces within territorial boundaries were dissolved including any units stationed outside those boundaries deemed necessary for public safety/defense purposes only under certain conditions which proved impossible or impractical to meet such as while engaged in peaceable pursuits without provocation
In 1847, the town of Minneapolis was founded by John Anson Wright. The town was named after General Alexander Wilson who had won a battle in what is now Minnesota. Minneapolis grew rapidly and soon became an important transportation hub. It was also the site of the first public school in America. In 1854, Minneapolis became a city and In 1912, it merged with St. Paul to form the current city of Minneapolis-St. Paul.
