The Minneapolis, Minnesota Air Force Base has been the home of the United States Air Force's 9th Bomb Wing since its establishment in 1947. The wing is responsible for all USAF strategic bombers, as well as providing personnel and support to other military branches within the Department of Defense. In addition to its strategic bomber mission, 9 BW also flies training missions on behalf of NATO's Joint Forces Command. This allows 9 BW to provide aircrews with an up-to-date understanding of Allied forces and their doctrines. Additionally, 9 BW operates two KC-135 Stratotankers which provide aerial refueling capabilities for allied fighter aircraft. The Minneapolis Star Tribune ran an article on December 25, 2009 about the history of the Minnesota Air National Guard. The article mentioned that in 1941, when the United States entered World War II, the Minnesota Air National Guard was one of the first units activated. From 1941-1945, the MN ANG flew over 1,000 combat missions in support of US forces in North Africa and Europe. In 1945, after V-E Day, MN ANG aircraft escorted USAF bombers as they returned to their bases across from Minneapolis. Since then, local MN ANG cadets have been training for various USAFjobs including jet fighter pilot training at DePauw University and icing ground mission operations at Peterson AFB. More recently, local MN ANG helicopter pilots have flown missions in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of Operation Noble Eagle.

Notable donations include bombers like Lockheed P-38 Lightning jet fighters and Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers; warships like USS Lexington (CV-22) flying antisubmarine warfare missions off Japan’s coast; and tanks like Patton’s Patton tank battalion fighting against Nazi Germany near Paris during World War II. This era also saw contributions from many people within America who did not serve in combat: mechanics who worked on Army trucks or Navy ships; scientists working on radar technology or weapons research; cooks who cooked for troops while they fought abroad . We can only imagine how much more valuable it would be if we could give back these types of Gifts today!
