Mendota Heights is a small town in Minnesota, United States. The population was 959 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Mendota Heights is located in Ramsey County and has a total area of 1 square mile (0.4 km²). Mendota Heights was founded in 1892 by farmers who had moved from what is now Sioux City, Iowa to property near present day Mendota Heights on the east side of Mendota Creek. There were few roads in this undeveloped area, so transportation consisted of horse and buggy or walking. Farming became the mainstay of the community's economy and spawned many businesses including a grocery store, bakery, auto garage, lumberyard and millinery shop. In addition to farming and logging, other early industries included a foundry and blacksmithing shops. By 1950 Mendota Heights had grown to its current size with over 100 families residing within its limits; however, some residents still farmed as well as bought homes in nearby neighborhoods such as Maplewood or Roselle Park which continue to be their homes today. The decline of agriculture during the late 20th century led to an increase in manufacturing within Mendota Heights along with other nearby towns such as Maplewood and Roselle Park while also leading to an overall decrease in population due to incorporation into larger cities throughout Minnesota during that time period. However, since 2000 there has been an increase in both industry activity as well as housing values within Mendota Heights making it one of the most affordable places for residents living within commuting distance from major metropolitan areas across Minnesota. The village's name comes from two separate sources: One source says it honors General John Jensey (1824-1911), who fought against Tecumseh’s Indians at Fort Snelling during the Mexican–American War; another source says it honors Amos Stowell (1793-1864), colonel commanding British forces stationed at Hudson’s Bay Company post Fort Snelling during American Indian Wars; both men had served under General Winfield Scott when he took command of Mexico’s army after Santa Fe fell following Buena Vista Siege on February 14th 1847 A subsequent reference discusses how “the people hereabouts called him ‘Humble Pie' because he always put out his hand for something small when he came into town - like a penny - no matter how rich somebody might be” This latter reference likely comes from history teacher Mrs Donatella Bunnaglio whose class discussing American Buffalo Soldiers taught her about this particular group of soldiers who fought against Mexican troops during the 1800s In response to these local references historians have attempted various interpretations regarding what "Mendota" actually means situated between Cedar Rapids on one side & Mankato on the other? The earliest written record we have which may give more insight into its etymology is an 1854 map which shows three communities: "Mendon", "Hempen" & "New Town". According to this map they all stand together but according different routes hence their initial names: Hempen via Mankato then through East Hendon before reaching Mendota whereupon everything changes again! New Town gets its name because it was built by settlers just north/northwest of Hempen so you can imagine their confusion when they saw all those houses going up! Finally official documentation arrived backdated To circa 1912 when Dr Manitoba published History Of Our Village which listed 3 villages- 'Mendon', 'Hempen' & 'New Town'. From this document we know that indeed Old Millenia got its name from Colonel Amos Stowell rather than Humble Pie! Although not everyone agrees with our interpretationtha Village Council voted unanimously last year to rename themselves after Reverend Earl Bradford!" A brief history about Mendota Heights goes back even further yet...to 1865 when David Heiman purchased 640 acres east OF MANKATO Creek known then Ft Snelling Barracks land grant #3 ever given out thru US Army Dept Of Military Records...he made Donation towards founding village.....this land parcel lay adjacent TO 24 acre lot granted BY WILLIAM HERNANDEZ TO DAVID LEE AND HIS FAMILY FOR THE USE OF AN INDIAN SCHOOLHOUSE...the school opened IN APRIL 1870......In July 1872 David Heiman donated another 400 acres directly west OF MANKATO Creek known then Red River Barracks site #1.......Hevards donation helped fund construction (& first flush toilets) OF NEW TOWN VILLAGE EAST OF MENDOTA CREEK.... Mendota Heights is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located in the Mendota Heights-Winona metropolitan area. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area and is bordered by Bloomington to the south, Mankato to the north, and Rice Lake to the west. Mendota Heights was platted in 1875 by John Hennepin County pioneers as a farming community on land donated by Colonel Alexander Ramsey. The name may be derived from Old French mendot (a word meaning "the place where wood grows"), which referred to an area near Hennepin Falls upstream from present-day Mendota Heights. The first post office in Mendota Heights was established in 1876, and remained open until 1907. In that year, it was moved to its current location on Maple Avenue east of Highway 36 Constitution Boulevard. According to the United States Census Bureau, Mendota Heights has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,914 people, 712 households, and 565 families residing in the town.[2] The population density was 2,559 inhabitants per square mile (902/km²). There were 806 housing units at an average density of 955 per square mile (343/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 1% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 3% from other races; and 1% from two or more races
Mendota Heights was founded in 1871 by Andrew Mendota and his wife, Eliza. The Mendotas were the first white settlers in what is now Minnesota. They established a cabin on the east side of Mendota Creek and started a small farm. In 1870, Andrew Mendota also built the first school in what is now Minnesota. The town was named after him and his wife. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, thanks to new transportation innovations such as railroads and canals. By 1900, there were over 150 people living in Mendota Heights. Thetown experienced some tumultuous times during its earliest years, including a race riot that year. However, overall it thrived until World War II when it was destroyed by fire.
