Mendota Heights is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It is located in southwestern Minnesota, at the junction of highways 36 and 218. As of the 2010 census, Mendota Heights had a population of 706 people, down from 834 in 2000. Mendota Heights was founded by Danish immigrants in 1881 and named for Nils Jensen Mendtgaard, who purchased land there in 1870. The first post office was established here on September 15, 1881. The original schoolhouse was built in 1885 and served as a meeting place for local farmers until it burned down in 1951. A new schoolhouse was completed here in 1938 and served as the town's main public building until it burned down again in 1984. A branch of the United States Post Office Service operated from this building until it closed its doors on July 1, 2006; mail service to Mendota Heights then stopped altogether due to budget cuts made within Postal Service priorities. Mendota Heights has been home to a number of businesses over the years including: Gopher Grain Mill which opened its doors on November 10, 1907; Jensig Paper Supplies which opened its doors on December 1, 1916; American Weavers (anow part of Macy's) which started production here on October 3rd 1915; First National Bank (renamed Wells Fargo after mergers with other banks) which came online eighteen months later on October 14th 1916; Kress Rubber Company (now part of H&R Block) which began production hereon January 1st 1923; and finally Kohl's Department Store (formerly Sears), opening its door for business on April 17th 1959 - all that remains now are individual buildings surrounding an open-air shopping mall dating back to 1905).
