The Marshall community began to form in 1871 when three men, John Marshall, W.T. Neilson and James Aiken, founded what is now known as the City of Marshall on Douglas County land east of present-day Marshall Street and north of Seventh Avenue NE. The original settlers were farmers who had moved from Canada to central Minnesota during the early 1800s to escape British rule. They chose this area because it was open country with little development possible at that time and they believed that it would be a good place to raise their families and farm. The city quickly grew into one of the most important localities in Douglas County – its residents supplied many pioneers with goods and services needed for their farms and towns across the county during those early years. Many businesses were founded in Marshall during its early years: an insurance firm (1876), a post office (1887), a barbershop (1896), a grocery store (1901), Mercers Drug Store (1906), First National Bank (1910), buttermilk restaurant/clubhouse/smithy shop(1920) and five churches – United Pentecostal Church (1900; rededicated in 1955), Presbyterian Church (1902; re-dedicated in 1957), Methodist Episcopal Church(1945) and BaptistChurch(1963). Additionally, two schools – Central High School (now part of Hastings Community Schools) operated from 1907-1972 while South High School operated from 1951-1965; both schools closed after 1972 due to lack of students.) In addition to these businesses, there were also several residences built including First National Bank building which still stands today on Third Avenue NE near Second Street NW; John Fenton House which sits on property currently occupied by Morningside Heights Elementary School; Unitarian UniversalistChurch which built an additional building on Third Avenue NE between University Drive - now Southeast corner University Drive NW -and Northwest corner University Drive NW -in 1915; Masonic Lodge No 2 which met at Oneida Lake until 1916 when it moved inland to meet at what is now Pioneer Hall before eventually moving back out onto Douglas County Road 574 south near East River Road before permanently ending up on Third Avenue NE betweenUniversity DriveNWand Northwest cornerUniversityDrIVENW
