Marshall, Minnesota is a small town in the central region of Minnesota that straddles the border of Canada and the United States. The population was 2,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The Marshall community was founded in 1858 by pioneer James Marshall and his family. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, peas, potatoes, carrots and other vegetables on their farmsteads near what is now Main Street in Marshall. The original village had a schoolhouse and a store where residents could purchase goods they needed for their homes or businesses. In 1881, with the creation of Canadian Saskatchewan Province, Marshal became part of that province's Unorganized Territory. When Saskatchewan was divided into two provinces in 1905, Marshall remained within Manitoba until 1912 when it became one again as Manitoba - Marshall County. In 1916 its name changed to Marshfield after developer Wm. Leland Marshfield donated land for a town site on Uptown Boulevard west of downtown Winnipeg to be known as Marshfield Township. On November 3rd 1920, the day before Thanksgiving Day - seventy-four years ago - Marshfield was incorporated as a township in Ramsey County under the name "Marshall". A post office called Marshal was established in 1858; it served until 1862 when it became an mail service stop for Prairie du Chien (now West Allis). A new post office named Galesburg was opened in 1865; it served until 1892 when it became an access station on Middle Road east of present-day Galesburg. A new post office named Soo called Shermanville after General John Sherman arrived at Duluth late one night en route to lead American forces against Confederate troops during the First World War appeared on maps only between 1915 and 1918; after that date its name reverted back to Marshal! The last official post office closed at noon on July 14th 1966 due to low mail volume which continued until 1970 when all mail service stopped due to budget cuts by then Governor Nelson Rockefeller!
