During the American Civil War, many people from around Minnesota lived in Maplewood because it was a military stop on the road between Minneapolis and St. Paul. Many residents lost their homes during the war but were able to rebuild quickly thanks to support from friends and family. After the war, maplewoods population continued to grow as farmers arrived to cleared land for crops. By 1900, maplewoods had reached its peak with over 1,000 residents. However, during World War II (1939-1945), due to wartime shortages of food products, many people left town for lack of opportunities. Today, Maplewood remains a small town with only about 150 residents
