The population was just over 100,000 at the time of its incorporation in 1871, but it has since grown to nearly 350,000 and continues to grow rapidly. The city is home to two large naval facilities: Naval Air Station Northrop Grumman and Naval Base Lynden-Cook. Maplewood also has an extensive maritime industry which includes shipyards, docks, and fishing vessels. The city's love for the navy began with a local mill owner who donated land for a naval air station in 1927. Over the years, other philanthropists have given money or lent equipment to help build Northrop Grumman's North Dakota Naval Air Station (NDNAS), Lynden-Cook's Naval Base (NB), and Boatswain's Mate Training School (BMTS) at NDNAS. In total, these institutions have helped support more than 1,500 military members and their families while they were stationed in Maplewood. Today, that love of the navy is still alive and well in Maplewood - both through local businesses that sell Navy items online or through face-to-face sales at various events throughout the year as well as through donations from individuals and organizations alike. Maplewood is a town in Polk County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,463 at the 2010 census. Maplewood is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settler in Maplewood was John A. Bender in 1856. In 1871, Jacob Kapp bought land from Peter Holmquist and built the first house in what is now Maplewood. The post office called Maplewood "Kapp's Prairie" until it changed its name to Cedar Rapids on December 3, 1903. Cedar Rapids annexed Maplewood on February 15, 1907; the towns consolidated into one municipality on March 1, 1907. On July 1, 1912, a group of men led by Orville Ladds organized an effort to purchase 4 square miles (10 km²) of land north of Cedar Rapids for $1 million dollars as a site for a new city that would be known as Maplewood after the town's namesake maple tree orchard near Interstate 94 and Highway 52 (now County Road 5). The City of Cedar Rapids acquired the land from Ladds' group on November 17, 1912; it was annexed into mapleWOOD on February 15, 1907. In 1915 when World War I began with America's entry into World War I and throughout 1917 there were mass arrests and deportations of Finnish Americans living inMinnesota due to Act 898 passed by the Minnesota State Legislature which made any person who had two identifiers – Finnish American or descendent thereof – above 18 years old ineligible for naturalization without inspection and possible deportation to Finland if found guilty so many people had been deported that only about 10 percent lived within their original community limits when they were annexed into mapleWOOD . On October 6th 1916 Mayor Dickey issued proclamation providing for a holiday called "Finnish American Day" in memory of those deported during WWI this day still celebrates today
