Maplewood is a city in Hibbing County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 9,879 at the 2010 census. The community of Maplewood was organized in 1858 as a result of the merger of two small villages: Maple Valley and Walnut Grove. It was named for the maple tree present in both those communities. The first store in Maplewood opened in 1861. In 1868, a post office was established and it remained operational until 1965. In 1898, James Hiltzik became the first white person to be born in Maplewood when he arrived from Russia with his family on a ship called "Yankee". Hiltzik's parents had come to America specifically to find him and bring him up as their son. He later became an attorney and judge in Hibbing County before retiring in 1978. He is also buried at Mount Hope Cemetery there. In 1905, George Wirth founded Wirth Manufacturing Company which manufactured radios and other electronics products until its bankruptcy in 1976. Wirth is also buried at Mount Hope Cemetery there along with his wife Agnes (née Kapp). Rochester North High School (now known as Rochester Technical Community High School) opened its doors on September 1st 1923 with only 8 students! The school would grow into one of the most popular high schools located within reach of fans of all ages thanks to some amazing fundraising by local residents including Mrs John Ahern who raised $1,000 towards construction costs alone!
