The Coast Guard was first organized in 1912. It was originally called the Minnesota Militia Artillery, and its purpose was to provide a coast guard for the state of Minnesota. In 1916, the Coast Guard was renamed the Marine Corps and it began providing protection along our shorelines. The Coast Guard continue providing service to our community until 1959 when it merged with the United States Army to form the United States Coast Guard Reserve. Today, the Coast Guard continues to provide public safety by helping protect our coastline and waterways from coastal erosion, smuggling, piracy and other terror threats. The Service is also responsible for Search And Rescue missions, response to hurricanes and earthquakes, as well as educating communities about maritime security issues. In addition to its primary responsibilities within our community, the Coast Guard has a variety of auxiliary programs that help support law enforcement efforts on various beaches throughout Minnesota.

Maplewood is a small town in the central part of the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Maplewood is located in Polk County and is bordered by Clearwater to the north, Rice Lake to the east, and Maple Grove to the south. It is about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Minneapolis-St. Paul and 30 miles (48 km) northwest of St Cloud.[1] The first settlers in this area were French Canadians who arrived around 1763. They named their new land Foxford Township after Sir Edmund fox who had helped lead British forces during the American Revolution. The township was organized on February 14, 1854, when it was combined with adjacent Rice Lake Township.[2][3] The town was laid out in a grid pattern on May 7, 1903,[4] when US Highway 8 became realigned along its present course.[5][6] The original name for Maplewood was "Lakeville".[7] In 1962, when Interstate 94 expanded into what is now Polk County,[8][9] an exit for I-94/US Highway 212 called "Foxford Boulevard" was built near where Park Avenue now intersects Hwy 8.[10][11][12] That same year, Maplewood's annexation by neighboring Rice Lake made it a full municipality under MN law[13]. On November 15, 1984,[14], zoning regulations were passed that limited development to single-family homes only within a certain radius around all businesses; this has resulted in most of downtown being undeveloped since then due to lack of business interest or demand from developers outside of maplewood limits. park avenue between hwy 8 & hwy 9 still remains woodsy though
The Coast Guard has been a part of American society for over 150 years. The Coast Guard is dedicated to the prevention of maritime disasters and the protection of our coastline. One of the first things that the Coast Guard did was provide law enforcement on America's coasts. They started out as fishermen's friends, serving as an emergency response to crimes committed on our coast. In 1915, they were given their own vessel- the cutter Newburgh- and began keeping watch over America's coasts and waterways. In 1951, Congress passed the National Security Act which gave rise to the Coast Guard Auxiliary. This organization helped provide support for military missions in coastal areas and also acted as a backup to Federal law enforcement when needed. Through these organizations, we have come a long way since 1915 when our ancestors first joined forces with police officers to keep America safe!
