In 1913, Brigade H became Division I, 3rd Infantry Regiment and Company A became Company L (later attached to 2nd Infantry Regiment). In 1916, 1st Battalion 168th Infantry regiment was raised within brigade I3rd Infantry Regiment and Companies K-L were formed as part of this battalion’s support unit located at Camp Meeker near Thief River Falls. During World War II 1st Battalion 168th Infantry regiment fought on both sides in Europe with distinction earning many medals for bravery including two Purple Hearts for servicemen killed or wounded during combat operations 1941-1945 inclusive. In 1945 company L disbanded due to lack of volunteers so its assets were sold off and all but two members joined other companies within division I3rd infantry regiment thereby ending army gift history in Maple Grove,. Maple Grove was founded in 1854 by Norwegian immigrants who were looking for land to settle after fleeing Norway's mandatory military service. The first settler named Maple was born in 1855 and Eventually 32 people from Maple Grove settled on a farm near what is now downtown Maple Grove. The early days were difficult as there were no natural resources and very few people willing to settle in such an isolated area. However, over time the community grew and developed its own schools, businesses, churches and more importantly its own culture which has helped it retain its nickname "the little town that could". In 1924 the first post office opened in Maple Grove. In 1951, when Duluth-Moorhead became an independent city, Maple Grove annexed most of neighbouring Iron Range Township including much of suburban Minneapolis (including Target Center). As a result of this annexation many residents chose to leave their rural homes behind and move into larger communities closer to job opportunities or shopping malls - with negative consequences for the local economy which still falls within the municipal boundaries today.
