At first it consisted of only 20 settlers and was called "Farmington". In 1863 the name change to Mankato after John's father-in-law's death. The town developed primarily agricultural based businesses with lumbering and mining being two major crops until the late 1800s when machine tool production became dominant in the local economy and industry declined thereafter .
