Mankato, Minnesota is a city that has been in existence since 1854 and the only military-related site within the city limits is the Mankato Armory. The armory was built as part of an effort by General David Dixon to improve communication between the army and townspeople. The armory today houses a museum, which tells the story of Mankato's relationship with the military. The first documented reference to an army presence in Mankato comes from 1854 when General David Dixon requested permission to build a arsenal in order to better communicate with his troops. The armory would serve as a training ground for future Minnesota soldiers and it would also be used as a location for public executions. In 1865, afterMinnesota became a state, the government barracks were built on State Street in Mankato and served as both civilian and military headquarters until 1959. In 1969, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which gave President Richard Nixon authorization to establish four brigades - one each at Fort Snelling (in Minneapolis), Fort Benning (in Georgia), Fort Worth (Texas) and Fort Leavenworth (Kansas). These brigades would become known as "the armies of America." The act also authorized $1 billion for defense programs over five years and announced plans for new sites including an airbase in St Cloud, Minnesota; development of heavy artillery batteries at Whitcomb Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas; construction of missile launchers at Ft Sill (Oklahoma) and Redstone Arsenal (Alabama). Since its establishment, Mankato's relationship with the military has seen many changes. It has been home to two active duty Army divisions - one during World War II while another was activated during operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1990-1991. Additionally, there are numerous Reserve units stationed here including 3rd Brigade Combat Team Infinity from Duluth; 9th Infantry Regiment from Appleton; 11th Armored Regiment from Hennepin County; 2nd Battalion Dakota Infantry Regiment from Rochester; 1st Battalion Minnesota Volunteer Militia from Ramsey County; 4th Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum battalion stationed here since 1968

Mankato is located on the west bank of the Mississippi River, about 25 miles (40 km) north of Minneapolis and 30 miles (48 km) south of St. Paul. The name Mankato comes from the Dakota Sioux word "manka," meaning "place where water flows." In 1899, when it became clear that Duluth was going to be the new capital of Minnesota, Mankato voted unanimously to become its first municipality. Despite this, Mankato continued to grow rapidly until World War II when it suffered from significant economic decline due to lack of employment opportunities. After the war, Mankato experienced growth again as new businesses moved into the area. However, by 2000, 3 percent of its population still lived below poverty line.
