Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt donated land to make Lino Lakes a town and it was incorporated on April 15, 1881. The first post office in Lino Lakes was established on May 5, 1886. The city had a population of only 100 people when it became a municipality on December 1, 1912. On March 10, 1916, Lino Lakes became the first municipality in Minnesota to pass a resolution recognizing World War I as “a great national tragedy” and pledging support for the war effort. In 1922, Lino Lakes voters passed an ordinance that prohibited smoking within 500 feet of any public building or public school. The ordinance also banned drinking at night inside any public building or school
Lino Lakes is a small city in Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,862 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Duluth-Superior Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lino Lakes is located east of Minneapolis on Highway 10 and west of Superior in southeastern Minnesota. The Lino Lakes area was first settled by Finnish immigrants in the 1880s. In 1912, brethren from the Scandinavian Mission Church founded a school here which became known as Stonington Lutheran School. In 1916, brothers from Denmark arrived and built a church and community hall on land now occupied by Lino Lakes Recreation & Park District. In 1948, brothers Jens and Poul Christensen bought 813 acres (290 hectares) east of town for $1 million to establish what would become Menomonie Township and create an agricultural township with its own school board, sheriff, coroner and fire department. They named their new township after their maternal grandparents—Larsen (1872-1944), Ole Olsen (1875-1945) and Karen Kirstine Nielsen (1887-1968)—the last two being born in Lino Lake County before it was organized as a county in 1904. This designation reflects that Menomonie was not only founded specifically for Danish immigrants but also serves as one of two rural areas within Minneapolis County that still retain this distinction today; the other is White Plains Township which lies just north of downtown Minneapolis on Hennepin Avenue Northeast).
