The Lino Lakes Naval Base is a major naval installation in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, and it has been home to the USS Minnesota (CA-31) since 1921. The base was originally built as an ammunition depot on a small island near present day Rochester, Minnesota. The first ship to be stationed at the Lino Lakes Naval Base was the USS Michigan (BB-63) in 1922. It served as flagship of Rear Admiral David S. Shultz’s First Fleet during World War II, which saw duty in both North America and Europe. In 1951, the USS Iowa (BB-62) became the first United States Navy ship to be based at Lino Lakes when it arrived from Pearl Harbor. During that same year, the 5th Fleet moved from Duluth, Minnesota to Lino Lakes after being decommissioned there. The Hawaii Training Facility opened in 1961 and eventually served as Headquarters for Commander Fifth Fleet until its closure in 1998. In 1966, Congress passed legislation authorizing naval personnel of member countries of NATO to be deployable to any country within that alliance for joint exercises or operations with those nations’ navies if such deployments were considered necessary for defense against aggression by other NATO members or Cold War rivals such as Russia or China. This authorization led ultimately to Operation Neptune’s Spear – an aborted attempt by Ulysses S. Lino Lakes is a town in Grant County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Lino Lakes was founded in 1881 by Norwegian immigrants. It is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Lino Lakes was named after Lieutnant Wilhelm Lino, an Austrian officer who had served with distinction in World War I and later became a U.S. citizen and member of the Minnesota Territorial Legislature. The name's first use as a place name appears to have been on July 12, 1881 when John Witherspoon published an article about the location in "The Farmer". In 1911 Lino Lakes was platted as a village by American businessmen Averill Harriman and Hosea Merrill. They donated $5,000 for its creation and laid out streets and buildings according to plan they had drawn up while living in Chicago. That same year saw the opening of First National Bank which remains one of the town's most significant institutions today with over 100 employees statewide including 15 on staff inside Lino Lakes Mall! In 1926-27 local farmers formed a cooperative society to grow corn on their own landfills which has continued ever since! In 1941-42 interest rates were raised on credit cards so businesses closed their doors for good!! After World War II many residents left for greener pastures but many continue to live here through various civic organizations such as Rotary Club (founded 1935), ZOEKE (Zion Episcopal Church). There are also several farms which offer milk products from cows that roam free on these properties! The small community economy has been based largely upon agriculture; however there are now several small businesses active within our community including: Bakery (owned & operated by Kathy & Donny Schoenbach), Lake Superior Papermill (owned by Pam Brosseau), Middle Academy School District #3A (Karen Cummings Headteacher) and Northside Pharmacy -(owned & operated by Lisa Weiland). These businesses provide jobs for our citizens as well as providing essential services such as groceries shopping or necessary medical supplies! Our thriving economy has allowed us to maintain friendly neighbourly relationships with all neighboring communities throughout southeastern Minnesota!
