Sligh, who served in the Union army during the Civil War. In 1884, when Colonel Wm. S. Sligh donated land to build the Lino Lakes YMCA, his gift included a battery of artillery cannons and 10 rifles for use by members of the local militia. In World War II, soldiers from various countries came to Lino Lakes to fight and some brought their families with them. One soldier who made an impact on the town was Sergeant John DePuye from Canada who landed at Duluth on September 24th 1944 as part of Operation Overlord (the Normandy invasion). He stayed in Lino Lakes until he died on October 2nd 1945 while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 149th Infantry Regiment at Omaha Beach near Saint-Lô. Sergeant DePuye is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in France along with other American servicemen killed during operations over Europe during World War II. Military gift history in Lino Lakes, Minnesota began with the town's first military engagement when a group of men from Lino Lakes enlisted in the Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment on December 15, 1862. The regiment served for three years and partook in several battles including the Battle of Fort Snelling. After serving their time, the men were mustered out on July 1, 1865. After Mustering Out, many of the veterans returned home to start new lives but a few took up arms again as members of the 3rd Minnesota Infantry Regiment which was raised on October 26, 1865. The regiment fought in all three months of the battle at Prairie du Chien where they lost over 60% of their number. They also participated in other battles throughout their service and ultimately surrendered at Camp Harewood on November 10th. After surrendering they were transported back to Minneapolis where they were processed into military prisons until March 1866 when they were finally discharged and allowed to re-join their families. The 3rd Minnesota Infantry Regiment is still present today and is currently active duty with the 4th Brigade Combat Team - 101st Airborne Division stationed in Illinois Heights Barracks near downtown Chicago. In honor of its military history, the brigade has recently erected a historical marker located outside of Lino Lakes bearing this battalion's name and location during its history (see photo below).

Lino Lakes was founded in 1879 by Finnish immigrants who named it after their farmstead at Lino Lake. The city was incorporated on December 2, 1903. The population had grown to 24,000 by 1960 when its annexation by Minneapolis raised its population to 50,000. In 2000, Lino Lakes became a charter member of the American Community Survey and has been growing rapidly since then as more people move into the area for job opportunities and educational opportunities. The city's economy depends heavily on agriculture, which employs about 60% of Lino Lakes' workforce. Major crops include corn, soybeans, wheat and rice; there are also livestock production industries such as chicken farming and pork processing. There are several small businesses that provide services such as printing and Signaling Services Corporation (PDSC), which provides electronic signage throughout the community. Lino Lakes is a small town in Minnesota, United States. It was established in 1871 and has been located in the township of Lino for over 100 years. The community is located on the banks of the St. Croix River, about 15 miles south of Minneapolis. Lino Lakes is home to a variety of businesses and amateur sports organizations, as well as two schools: Maplewood Elementary School and Lino Lakes Middle School. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. Lino Lakes was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1871 after they left their farmstead in Askerøy on the island of Zealand (present-day Oslo) during the early 1830s following a period of political upheaval there. At first, only men worked on the farmstead; later women joined them work until World War II when girls were finally allowed to work on farms statewide then also became available to work at home again after that war ended. The name "Lino" comes from Hvit loftset (Hvidt Loft), meaning "high roof". The first settler arrived from Nordland County, Norway around 1853/54 with Andreas Johansen and his family. They built a log cabin near present day Maplewood Cemetery before moving further downriver into what would become Lino Township sometime between 1857-1859 because it was offered by Governor Blythe Molineux for resettlement of refugees from Stavanger duringtornadene (the initial wave of winter weather arrivals). There are still descendants living within Lino Township today who trace their ancestry back to these pioneer settlers through various channels including marriage or adoption into Norwegian families while others have emigrated specifically to Minnesota since its establishment as an independent country nearly 120 years ago! The first school opened in 1865 which served grades K-12 until 1907 when it moved up to replace an earlier one burned down during a storm. In 1915 an addition was added to Maplewood Elementary School which housed grades 7-9 until 1949 when it too burned down; this time however, due to insurance claims being made against it by those affected by Hurricane Agnes damage no rebuilt school ever happened! Finally, when all other buildings within both villages were destroyed by fire caused by lightning strikes in 1978 arsonist(s) set fires throughout both communities resulting in loss of life* along with total destruction valued at $27K! Although some reconstruction did take place starting with restoration efforts following hurricane Aida* much more comprehensive *and expensive* rebuilding project had started almost immediately following Aida when replacement trees were purchased for both communities brand new roofs were installed for both elementary schools old windows replaced water tanks reconstructed original fences replaced historic streetlights Replacing most everything inside municipal limits excepting churches former post office building now used as apartments *This included complete rebuild job cost estimate not just restoration cost so “AIDA” not mentioned anywhere!!*) An interesting footnote about this particular event is that even though there have been numerous arson attempts throughout history targeting local municipalities including Twin Cities neighborhoods memorializing members lost during natural disasters I have yetto see any attempt made whatsoever against either Maplewood or Lino Lakes since 1978!!! This may be partially attributed to city ordinances not allowing property damage claims against private individuals(*note: This has changed somewhat recentlysee below)*?
