Lakeville is a small town in the state of Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. Lakeville is located on the western bank of the river Elkhorn River, north-northwest of Minneapolis and south-southwest of St. Paul. The first settlement in what is now Lakeville was established by Dutch fur traders in 1765 as a trading post on an armory bluff overlooking the river. In 1827, settlers from Illinois founded a community called Neshoba Heights on an adjacent bluff, which became known as Lakeville after they lost control of that location to Native Americans during the Dakota War (1868-1869). In 1881, when Minnesota became a U.S. territory, it included parts of both Iowa and Wisconsin; however, only Iowa's portion was annexed into Minnesota and incorporated as village of Lakeville. The name "Lakeville" was chosen for its similarity to "Lacrosse." The first school in what is now Lakeville opened in 1887; it continued to serve residents until 1915 when it moved to new premises across Elkhorn River from present day downtowns

The town quickly descended into ruin and eventually lost its status as a major center of commerce and culture. In the 1920s, however, some enterprising individuals began to revive both aspects of local life. They started a small grocery store and an auto dealership on Main Street. This revival led to new businesses being opened up in downtown Lakeville and it once again became a vibrant community with strong cultural ties to its larger neighbor – Minneapolis. After more than fifty years as an unimportant outpost in rural Minnesota, Lakeville has finally regained some level of prosperity thanks to efforts by locals and outsiders alike. Despite lingering challenges such as crime rates and persistent poverty (particularly among young people), there is potential for growth within this struggling small town where history still plays an important role in daily life
