Lakeville is a town in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 579 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Lakeville were Norwegian immigrants who arrived in 1858. The town was platted as a village on May 17, 1865 by Minnesota Territorial Legislaturemember John Millington and other pioneers. On October 10, 1868, the name of the town was changed to honor General Ulysses S. Grant when he became President of the United States after his victory at Gettysburg. In 1923, a post office was established in Lakeville; it served until 1924. The first mail service between Minneapolis and St Paul arrived here on November 3, 1878 from Rochester through a route over the upper Iowa River valley (now known as Rice Road). The railroad came to Lakeville in 1898 and soon made it one of its main stations with three tracks running through this small mining community; freight trains stopped here for hours at a time loading ore from mines along the way to Duluth or Chicago In 1912 and 1913, local men organized an edition of "The Great Western Railway Ride" which took place every year during Lent and ended up covering most of western Canada including Winnipeg
