The first settlers to Hutchinson were three families from Illinois: James, William, and Christopher Hixon arrived on July 22, 1881. They built a log cabin on what is now Court Street. The Hixon family left for good in 1882 when their farm failed because of bad weather and crop failures. John Hutchinson came overland from Canada in 1883 and started a successful lumber business that lasted until 1920. He alsoowned two grocery stores in town while he ran the business. John died at age 83 in 1927 and is buried at Maple Grove Cemetery near his home. Elizabeth Hutchinson was born into a prominent Canadian family on February 3, 1879, in Ottawa County, Ontario. She married John Hutchison on October 2, 1901, and they moved to Hibbing when he took over the running of the lumber company from his father-in-law. The Hutchisons had six children: four daughters and two sons; one daughter survived infancy and married; one son became an electrician; one son died young; one daughter married again (a man named George); two girls served as nurses during World War II; one girl graduated from college; all but one of their children are deceased today including Elizabeth herself who passed away on May 15th 2019 at 101 years old
