In 1827, David Ramsey founded a post office at Hutchinson Creek along the Ottawa River. This location was chosen because it lay between two major Canadian rivers, making it easy to trade goods with both nations. Hutchinson was incorporated as a village on April 14, 1881, by vote of its citizens. Its name comes from Alexander Hutchison (1784-1851), an early settler who donated land for a courthouse and other public buildings in the Village." A store building and school were built in 1888 by Wm Hickey and are still standing today next to Interstate 35E exit 191B south of town. In 1907, Canada Drugs began operations on Main Street in town which continued until 1985 when they relocated to 36th Street NE in Minneapolis. In that year, Canada Drugs merged with JCPenney which left Hutchison with just one retail store remaining before closure in 2001 due to financial problems brought on by the recession. Today there is only one restaurant serving food from local farms within walking distance of most residents

Hutchinson, Minnesota is a small town in the southern portion of the state ofMinnesota. It was founded in 1854 by John Hutchinson and his wife, Martha. The population of Hutchinson was 925 at the 2010 census. The community is located on the north bank of the Mississippi River just east of Minneapolis. John Hutchinson had come to America from Ireland in 1824. He married Martha, a native of Massachusetts, in 1828 and they established themselves in what is now Hutchinson. They were farmers and participated in local politics until John died in 1851 after a long life as an farmer and public servant. Their son, James A., took over their farm operation and served as mayor from 1865 to 1870 and again from 1880 to 1886; he also served as postmaster from 1863 to 1870. In 1907, James A.'s grandson, Milton C., became president of the United States for one term (1897-1901). The first school in Hutchison was built on land donated by Isaac Lombardt; it opened its doors on November 1, 1854. In 1888–89, a new school building was erected on State Highway 10A south of town; this building still stands today and is used as a museum by the town government. One other noteworthy development during this time period was the construction of a dam across the Mississippi River upstream from town which provided water for local farming purposes and allowed for increased trade between townspeople and southwestern Minnesota’s mining communities; this dam also played an important role in promoting river shipping traffic through Hutchinson between Minneapolis and Duluth
