The first European settlers arrived in what is now Hopkins in 1836. At that time there were just a few homes and no industry or commerce. By 1860, however, business had grown sufficiently to warrant incorporation as a town government under the name Hopkinsville by Judge John Blythe with voting representation from all wards in addition to an elected mayor who could veto ordinances passed by the town council. In 1876, when Minneapolis was founded on Lake Superior by white settlers seeking to establish trade routes with Asia through fur-trading posts on the lake's southern shoreline, Hopkins became an important center for commercial operations due to its location at the mouth of Clearwater Creek on Lake Michigan and its access to water supplies necessary for growing crops and raising livestock. In 1909, during World War I, General Motors established a plant here known as GMC-Hoping which manufactured armored cars for America's war effort; this plant continued until 1984 when it closed because of economic recessionary conditions throughout much of North America at that time. During World War II various industries were erected here including airplane production (Asteroid A-1), shipbuilding (USS White Sands), munitions production (Navy Model T battleships) and more importantly aircraft engines/components/parts manufacturing (Allis Chalmers J-9E turbojet engines).
