Hopkins is a small town located in Jackson County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. Hopkins is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is home to the Hopkins Air Force Base and to the Hopkins School District. The first residents of what is now Hopkins were Norwegian immigrants who arrived in 1854. They were followed by Swedes in 1857 and Irishmen in 1865. The area that includes today's Hopkins was first settled as a farmstead by John Wagoner and his family in 1868. Wagoner named his holdings "Walker's Prairie." A post office called Hopkinton was established here in 1870, and remained In operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1905, when Minneapolis became an incorporated city, Hopkinton became one of its primary wards within the new city limits. In 1912, the school district which includedHopkins merged with the Minneapolis–SaintPaul School District to form one large school district covering all of Minneapolis-St Paul County. The original frame building for what would become Academy High School (now known as Hoffman Middle/High School) was built on what is now First Avenue North between NW 8th Street andNW 9th Street in 1924; it served as both local high school for townspeople and also as a middle/junior high school for students from outside of Hopkins during those years (it wasn't until 1961 that Academy moved into its current building on East Side Drive). In 1990, Academy joined with nearby Maplewood Elementary School to form Ladybird Elementary &Middle Schools; this merger created a comprehensive educational system including grades K-12 for all students living within Ladybird boundaries (the exception being Maplewood which continues to offer only pre-Kindergarten through 4th grade).
