As coffee enthusiasts, we often think of today’s coffee beans as renovated versions of beans from centuries ago. However, the origins and history of artisanal coffee are much more complex than that. The first espresso machines were created in Italy in 1839 and were used to make milk-based drinks such as cappuccinos and lattes. Coffee was not originally brewed for human consumption until relatively recent times, with the Portuguese colony of Brazil brewing its first cup of coffee in 1795. Eventually, European settlers began to realize the potential for coffee as a trade commodity and began to import large amounts of this valuable crop from Africa. In 1847, an American entrepreneur named Samuel Morse opened a small grocery store near Minneapolis that became known as the “First Coffee House on Earth” due to its role in introducing espresso machine-made coffee to Americans. Over time, other businesses followed suit and America became home to some of the world’s most renowned cafes: Starbucks®, Panera Bread®, and Peruvian Coffee Company (PCA). Some of the earliest coffee beans were grown in Hopkins, Minnesota. In 1872, a man named Charles Goodyear started purchasing coffee bean from farmers in the area and roasted it himself. Goodyear's coffee was considered some of the best in the country and helped to start the Hopkins Coffee Company. The company continued to grow and produce high-quality coffee until 1916 when it merged with another company to form United Coffee Packers Inc.
Hopkins, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Hopkins County. The population was 8,692 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area and the Twin Cities–SaintPaul Combined Statistical Area. The City of Hopkins was platted in 1868 as part of a larger settlement by farmers from eastern Canada who had come to Minnesota in search of land to settle after being driven out of their previous homes by prairie fever during the American Civil War. After becoming a town, it adopted its current name in honor of General James Hennepin, who fought in the Dakota Wars and then led an expedition against Native Americans on August 25, 1862 near present-day Hopkinsville. The city is located on a bend inriver of the Mississippi River which forms its border with Missouri; it has access to both waters through locks and dams operated by Mankato Power Company (now Hydro- impunity). The river also provides water for municipal wastewater treatment plants and power generation facilities including two nuclear reactors operated jointly by MN Power Generation Co., Inc., a subsidiary of MN Energy Holdings Corporation, and General Electric Co.. The first post office was established in 1865. In 1889, the Hopkins School District was organized and Hopkins became its first school district.
