The town was founded in 1892 and incorporated as a city in 1966. The first settlers to Hibbing were farmers who moved from Iowa during the 1850s. In 1892, city officials decided to merge with neighboring village of White Earth and create what would become known as "the busiest little town on the Great Lakes". By 1926, Hibbing had become one of the most populous cities in Minnesota thanks to its growth industries such as paper mills and fertilizer production. During the late 1960s through early 1970s, Hibbing experienced economic decline due to heavy industry closures and general attrition within its workforce. However, due to strong community activism by Mayor Don Nehlen and City Council members Bob Cooksey and Norma Koppmeyer, the economy bounced back by 1973 when construction began on a new industrial park that would contain more than 100 manufacturing businesses statewide. The park has since extended into current day Gibbons Township while other businesses have locating nearby including an elementary school, library, ambulance service provider (MedStar), movie theater (Downtown Entertainment District), post office (Hibbing-White Earth ZIP code) mall, health care facility (CenturyLink Health Care System - Twin Cities Campus) and two grocery stores anchorming what is now called " downtown." Today's Hibbing enjoys significant commercial development anchored by two major employers: MedStar Health Partners LLC for outpatient services and CenturyLink Inc., which provides telecommunications services throughout much of centralMinnesota; both companies are headquartered within the city limits. Other major employers include EDS Corporation for electrical engineering services; Lululemon Athletica Limited for apparel sales; United States Cellular Corporation - parent company of Verizon - providing cell phone service throughout much of centralMinnesota; Wabasha Arts & Crafts Inc., maker of quilts; local government offices including those responsible for fire prevention/fighting/emergency management; tourism agentures including several museums located within walking distance of downtown or just minutes away via public transportation or ferries

Hibbing, Minnesota is a small town located in the northwestern United States. The population was 2,878 at the 2010 census. Hibbing is home to Hibbing Historic District and the Hibbing Museum of History. The community began as a farming village in 1881. In 1905, it became an incorporated municipality and since then has undergone several name changes, including Hibbing Heights in 1916, Hibbing during World War II as part of General Motors Corporation’s plants in that area, and finally Hibbing Township after its incorporation into the state of Minnesota in 1959. The first school was built on what is now Main Street in 1881. It closed in 1896 due to lack of pupils and reopened with private instruction by Mrs. Auld from 1892-1894. The first public school building was built on State Highway 36 across from the present day First Presbyterian Church (now Methodist) between 1907-1910. In 1916, Hibbing Heights became an incorporated municipality; this change followed upon GM's purchase of a large block of land from John Hargrave for $1 million ($ when measured in 2009 dollars). In 1945, following World War II efforts by the government to secure peace through ending warring factions within Yugoslavia,[2] Hibbing became one of four Twin Cities sites chosen for a planned nuclear plant known as Green Valley Nuclear Plant.[3][4] However due to environmental concerns surrounding plutonium production at that time, construction never took place – instead Hickory Point Nuclear Site was established nearby on Lake Superior instead[5][6]. Since 1959, when Hibbing Township entered into state government service under the authority ofMinnesota Statute 463F which provides local government services including schools and fire protection,[7] many important municipal events have occurred here including: In 1983–1984 Mayor Tom Kiefer helped make possible passage of AB 921 which granted township residents voting rights; mayor Pro Tem Donny Hoffa successfully campaigned for reelection in 1990 running unopposed against two other candidates; township trustees voted unanimously to adopt a resolution designating May Day as National Labor Day commemorating scores killed by white supremacists during protests at Flamingo Hotel south Minneapolis];[8] there were also successful campaigns waged against zoning changes that would have reduced property values downtown while increasing development near Interstate 35W; finally vote results showed incumbent trustee Wendi Ziegler being defeated handily by challenger Dale Satterwhite resulting in her term expiring at year's end 2013[9].
